Did anyone start using the Unjury long before surgery?

Did anyone start using the Unjury protein long before surgery (like 5 months before). I find I am hungry all of the time...it's not even that I want to lose a lot of weight before my six months has elapsed and I can be considered for the surgery...I just don't want to be hungry ALL of the time like I am now. I see the dietician on the 8th and I am sure I could ask her then, but was wondering if I could start using the Unjury now. I work in healthcare (HMO) and one of our bariatric surgeons did mention I should start "looking" for a protein "shake" that I like so that when the time comes to do the pre-op liquids, I will already have something to use (I don't even know that he will be my surgeon, but he might be). Thanks Erin

Erin, Unfortunately for me, Unjury had not yet come onto the market before my surgery in late July 2003. However, if you go to their web site, you'll see that it's designed for use for more than just bariatric applications. After my surgery, my surgeon requires the first 3 weeks post-op to be on liquid protein only (not pureed or soft foods). I barely made it through that period, and after I started getting back the soft solids, which I knew I needed to supplement w/protein beverages, I sort of went on a "protein shake strike" because I just couldn't stand the other products anymore. (I also had an all liquid protein regime required for the last 2-3 weeks just before the surgery.) Shortly thereafter, there was a pot luck dinner for one of my post-op support meetings, and the Unjury representatives were there. I purchased my first cannister of the vanilla flavor on the spot! If you can start satisfying your hunger now with the protein shakes, you'll be that much ahead of the game later. Good luck. Leesa

I am also pre op and a Kaiser member. I have been seeing the Nut for 4 months now and hope to have surgery with in the next 6 months. I just received my samples and today tried the Chocolate. Check their web site you can get 5 samples for about $11.00. I asked the not about starting using the protein now and she said not yet. She also said not to buy anything in bulk because your taste will change after surgery. I hope this hope. Barbara

Hi Barbara Did she say why you shouldn't start the protein yet? I guess I can wait until my June 8 appt., but I am so tired of just wanting to eat all of the time...anythng that will help. I'm nervous about showing my meal diary because I am honest in it and I am afraid the dietician will explode... Erin

I started trying out protein shakes before surgery, and got some idea of what I liked and disliked. My nut advised me to add one or two protein shakes to my daily diet for a month or so prior to surgery. The problem is that your tastes may change, so something you liked as a pre-op might not appeal to you anymore post-op. I've found that the chocolate and vanilla shakes that I liked pre-op (like Unjury) now taste much too sweet. Right now I'm just using Nectar mixed with iced tea - the tannins in the tea tone down the sweetness.

My surgery is scheduled for June 8th, and I've been using UnJury for nearly 4 months now. I've tried several others, but so far, it's the one I like the best!! Blanche
