New and looking for supports!
RNY on 08/14/12
Hi All!
I just wanted to take a minute to introduce myself. I am fairly new to the boards and am only 2 visits in to my 6 month pre-surgery process, although I have been researching WLS for years. I definitely struggle with a lot of the pre-op stuff (diet, emotions, patience) and am stuck between deciding between RNY and VSG.
On a positive note: I track all my food (good and bad), have started going to the gym, have been to a couple support groups at GBMC, and I'm slowly, but surely, telling my friends and family about surgery and am pleasantly surprised at the support I am receiving. I even started blogging for the emotional outlet (although its difficult to keep up with. lol).
I'd love to meet some local people and get some support from people who have actually been through this whole process! Im about 30/40 minutes North of Baltimore and would ideally love to find a few people close to the area to get together with on a normal basis, but I dont mind traveling a bit either.
Anyhow, just wanted to say HI! I hope everyone is doing well!!

wow love the name LOL. if you want to tell me why you are getting surgery, health situation, what made you overweight, i can give you my opinion on which surgery would be best for you. each has it's own benefits.
i live northeast of bmore so we might be close to each other. there is a fb group for the maryland people. i personally don't go on it very much cuz fb annoys me now but there are many other people there so you can meet people that way as well. if you want the link i'll send it to you at some point. i'm at work right now so can't access it to link it.

Thanks Nicole!
Lets see... why am I getting surgery? I've actually been researching surgery for a couple years. I've tried about a million 'diets' over the years, some successful, some not so much. I finally hit a point a few months ago where I just couldn't take it anymore. I had recently gained back all the weight I had lost in the spring (about 20lbs) and added an additional 20-30lbs after quitting smoking in October. I feel the weight so much more now. My back is in constant pain, I cannot stand for long periods of time and if I break it up, my ankles end up being sore for days. The simple fact that I cannot do the things I love to do anymore has finally caught up with me emotionally and I have decided to get serious about making a long term lifestyle change.
My health is "ok" with the exception of horrible cholesterol and triglycerides. I'm also Vitamin D deficient and will find out the rest of my deficiencies next month, Im sure.
Behaviorally, Im an emotional eater. Happy, sad, bored, etc. I just eat and eat crap. Carbs, sweets, more carbs. I'm definitely more of a snacker in the sense that its snack food. I can eat just popcorn or chips - albeit a bag of each. I'm not much of a breakfast eater and I tend to drink a lot of my calories - not soda so much as flavored coffee, milkshakes, juices. I do eat larger portions as well.
I have definitely been working on things over the course of this process and I have some good days and some bad. I've reduced the liquid calories, eating more protein, introducing more healthy foods, started going back to the gym, etc. I'm ready to put the work in and am actually looking forward to finally making a change in my life for me and no one else. Im sick and tired of the yo-yo diets and feeling physically crappy - let alone the emotional aspect of it all - on a daily basis. At the end of the day, if I dont make this change, I won't be around to see what else can go wrong.
Anyhow - Hope this answers your questions! Let me know about any meet ups - I dont mind traveling closer to downtown if theres something going on. As it is, I drive to GBMC a few times a month. :)
