New TLC reality show Big Sexy
I only watched a snippet of it online but there is a new reality show about bigger gals in NYC. They are big and proud. Most of them are over 100 lbs overweight from what I can tell.
So is it good to say that being that overweight is ok? Do you think this show helps us or hurts us?
My thoughts are this. Part of what fueled my eating is the hatred I felt toward me because of my weight. I think that people should learn to be more understanding of our situation. But the reality is being that overweight is unhealthy and should not be seen as ok. I want us to be treated better but I don't want us to convince ourselves it is ok to be morbidly obese.

Unfortunately a lot of women have that perception. For example Mo'nique (TV) she had that same philosophy but I see that all changed cause she lost weight and all. So when they realize that they have to lose weight all that changes. It shouldn't be seen as ok at all.
I am who I am and accept my feelings wholeheartedly.
Those that mind don't matter, and those that matter don't mind.

I haven't seen the show. But I am not a fan of the Biggest Loser because I feel it is exploitive and perpetuates unhealthy and unnatural expectations. I mean if it were really about helping people, why vote them off? I think this new show will also end up more exploitative than empowering.
As for those that are on the show, I think it is good to remember that weight is not what defines us as people. I have a career, friends and many positive aspects to my life that have nothing to do with my weight, but...my size has not been "good" for me. It has not only put my health at risk, it has also taken away a number of simple pleasures and simple moments that normal sized people never even have to think about. So I totally agree with your statement, and I will paraphrase my take: "people should be more understanding, but that should not equate to encouraging."
