I live in MD and my insurance is Blue Cross Blue Shield-Blue Choice. Do they cover WLS?

Yes, I live and work for CareFirst and have Blue Choice myself.  My husband had the sleeve on 3/1/11 and I had RNY on 4/5/11.  You just need to meet certain criteria.  Call Customer Service and they will review all that with you.  Good luck :-)

It depends on your employer actually.....most insurances cover WLS but it is up to your employer whether or not they will include it in their contract.

I had Blue Choice with my former employer but they had a restriction to WLS coverage in their contract stating it will not be covered unless they have over 50 (full time) employees on staff.  Which they do not, meaning no one there would ever be covered for it.

You would have to contact Blue Choice and ask what is covered under YOUR policy for WLS.

It really is by the individual, not the insurance company as a whole.

Mark, I had the same issue.  I was told when I called Carefirst it was covered.  I went though everything to only have them tell the people at GBMC that it was not covered.  I called Carefirst and they said when the plan renewed our employer did not include it.  I went to my Human Resource person and she followed up with CArefirst.  Luckily it was a mistake on their end and they fixed it.  I am starting my journey with GBMC COMP program and so far I am pretty happy.

That is odd that you are saying 40 bmi and 45 w/ 2 comorbidities because i was told 40 bmi or 35 with 2 comorbidities,  Maybe it is the employee group.  Anyway, good luck.
