Surgeon moved :(
Hi! New to this board....
Anyone in maryland have/had Dr Cynthia Long? I started with her in October 2010 and have all of the hurdles done except for Upper Endoscopy (this thursday!) and have lost 23 lbs in the bariatric diet..... my question is, Dr Long is moving to Sinai and quitting her private practice. Anyone suggest that I continue with her regardless or should I dump her and try someone else? I'm having a bit of trouble with the staff at Sinai, as it's a hospital and not a private practice, they want me to resend all my labs/documentations directly to them instead of my file w/ Dr. Long and they want me to see their nutritionist. Not too happy w/ that obligation, as I've already developed a rapport with the nutritionist at Shady Grove Adventist (in addition to having already paid for nutrition/exercise consults).
I'm very ambivalent about sticking with Dr Long, as Baltimore is pretty far for me, but I also don't want to start over if I don't get credit for the work I"ve already done.... I'd left message for the Shady Grove team to discuss changing to them.... Also haven't been able to find out if the support group is meeting back up there, as I could really use some in-person support on this decision!

Hi nfarris,
I too am a patient of Dr. Long. I started with her in September and on my last appt with her in november, she told me about her moving to Sinai. I too was disappointed and worried about the commute but i realized i've come too far to switch doctors and pay more out of pocket fees for consultations etc.
I've checked with the rest of the docs in montgomery county and they all want consultation fees and they want me to follow their program, so that means extra work on my behalf. I am here in rockville and once the ICC opens up the commute will be less than 1 hr for me to head to Sinai.
Dr. Barry Greene at shady grove does not accept commercial insurance, so be careful if you're thinking of going with shady grove, i also know there's another doctor there, but i am unaware of his program. i just gave up searching for better and i'm gonna stick it out with Long. I am just having trouble losing weight but hopefully i can dish 10lbs by the time she is taking appts again in february.
i don't know what else Sinai would want from me being that i'm done with all my appts, i don't mind seeing their nutritionist, but i refuse to pay for another thing after i've paid my $500 to doctor Long.
good luck on your endeavor, and keep me updated on what you plan on doing or what you find. i'm sure you'll make the right decision. in the end for me it was my gut feeling of sticking with Long, and i've gone against my gut feeling and have been wrong most of the time, so this time i feel i'm right. good luck again!

Hi! I'm glad to hear from another patient. I'd heard that about Dr. Greene - there's also Dr. McKenna at SGH but his normal office is in Frederick I think.
I'd been leaning towards just sticking it out with Dr Long too. It's not just the money investment but the time & effort that really causes one pause to shift in mid-stride.
What Sinai explained to me is that, once you call them and give them your info as a Dr Long patient, they'll send you a packet of info to fill out. Yep, more papers! They told me it's necessary to meet with their nutritionist, Kate, even if you'd done your work with Mandy at SGH. However, they told me you don't have to pay AGAIN as they'll waive the fee for their nutritionist. Hmmmm.... skeptic in me doubts that's how it will really pan out. I'd been playing phone tag to set up my consult with their nutritionist. Anyway, also will need a letter of recommendation from your PCP and have ALLLL of your records forwarded over to Sinai. They included a release of info from Dr. Long's "office" to Sinai in my packet, so hopefully all records will translate well & be legal. Just to be safe, I'll probably contact all my doctors all over again to have them forward my info. Better to have duplicate info than have them say "oh, you got denied because you didn't do X,Y,Z".
I'll probably keep w/ Dr. Long too just because of the committment & I'm rather stubborn when I set my mind on something. I actually lost 23 lbs in the whole process (YIPEEE), and haven't cheated during the holidays - surprising even myself!
I'm glad to hear from you & keep me updated on how you're doing on the weight loss. Thanks so much for the info on MoCo drs!

I can imagine how frustrating this can be. I am sorry that you have to deal with this situation.
Not much of an advice here. Just wanted to say to do all the research you need to do to figure out what you should do. If you go to another surgeon you will have to follow their program see their nutritionist as well and some you have to pay a program fee.
Wishing you all the best in your journey.

I am who I am and accept my feelings wholeheartedly.
