Biotin {{X Post}}
I am 18 months post op from RNY. I went thru the hair loss phase & it wasnt bad. In July I had plastics which ended up with major complications & resulted in 7, yes 7, more surgeries due to massive infections. So I wound up with major anesthesia in my system. Now I am seeing MAJOR and I do mean MAJOR hair loss. I mean when I wash my hair or comb my hair {{I cant even use a brush anymore!!}} it falls out by the handfull! My stylist said it is a result of the anesthesia. My concern led to numerous labs from my doctor, which showed all my levels were good & no signs of major issues like lupus or lymes.
So now I am going to try Biotin. But I am unsure of how much to take. I did look online and I found several different dosages.
I know people here have used it, so I am hoping someone can give me some insight on how much to take. Help please!
Also, has anybody else went thru this & what did you do?

Heather,
I didn't really start losing my hair until I was about 10 months out. It's been an ongoing problem because of being hospitalized in January and June of this year with bleeding ulcers, and the resulting series of endoscopies (anesthesia). I've been taking the hair skin and nails vitamins which have 3.000mg biotin PLUS I've done a bunch of research online about it. I've read that bamboo silica is good to take as well as horsetail, although the bamboo is better. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find the bamboo silica in the stores, so I'll be ordering some online.
Also, check out this link. There's some really good information on here> gastricbypasstruth.com/life-after-gastric-bypass/hair-loss-a fter-gastric-bypass-tips-for-losing-less-and-regrowing-more- faster/.
Good Luck! It's a struggle to be taken day-by-day!

Hi Heather! So sorry to hear of your complications and surgeries this year. It is scary each time we go under anethesia, I know I've been under 4x this year myself. I too am dealing with hair loss, and have since August. I've been taking 2000 mcg Biotin a day since my VSG.
Two days before my revision hip replacement surgery in Oct. I cut my hair shorter to help with breakage (and because it was looking like an old thin scraggly broom. My hairdresser recommended Nioxin which you apply directly to the scalp. She swore it's helped several of her customers so I figured I'd give it a try. I honestly have noticed after two weeks or so no more broken hairs on my pillow each morning, although washing my hair it still comes out more than I'd like. I'm hoping the continued use of both Biotin and Nioxin will promote hair growth as well.... time will tell!
Best wishes to you hun! I already bought a wig, but so far haven't used it.

Hi Heather,
I took Biotin 2,000 mcg daily. It doesn't help with the hair falling out but it helps with the regrowth of the hair. Nioxin applied directly to the scalp helps too and my hair dresser told me to use it.
It will take a while but you will see a big difference. Your new hair will grow differently though. I know mine did.
I am glad that you are doing well after all those major surgeries.
Hugs,
Cira
