Hi everyone,
My last hurdle for DS approval is a nutritional consult/evaluation.   Can you recommend anyone in the Gaithersburg/Frederick/Baltimore area?   They do not need to be affiliated with a CofE.   I just am having trouble finding anyone.   BCBS provider locator not much help yet.
I appreciate any advice!
thanks!

Hi Becky,

I have a wonderful nutritionist.  Her name is Margaret Furtado and she is affiliated with Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, MD.  She is very nice, competent, and is a wellspring of knowledge.  The number to call to is 410-550-5369.

Good luck!

Lisa, is she covered under your insurance?  I haven't found a NUT that is covered?

I was told when I began that almost always the NUT visits are not covered... I did not even look for someone BCBS covered because I decided to suck it up and get it over with since it was only $150 for the visits required...

Do you have a NUT in Maryland that you would recommend?

Do you have a CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield plan?  If so, you can search for a nutritionist on their web site.  Go to carefirst.com, then "Find a Doctor" then select "medical plans" and then you can search by specialist - Nutritionist.

If you have a Federal plan, you can go here and begin your search: http://provider.bcbs.com/

If you have trouble with using either site, let me know and I'd be happy to help guide you through some search options.  I happen to work for CareFirst, so I know our web site inside & out. LOL

Hi,

I also recommend Margaret Furtado.  She is awesome.  I have BCBS Fed and it is covered on my plan.  I think i have a limit of 6 visits per year.

Can I use her even if I plan to go to another surgeon at a different program?

I too think Margeret is a wealth of information and someone with a great deal of experience particularly in the WLS arena.  She is not covered by BCBS - they're my carrier.  As I understand it, they cover nutritional visits for diabetes and things of that nature but don't cover visits post WLS.  Makes no sense to me because I don't see how you can cover the surgery but not the medically neccessary follow up treatment.  But, I've sucked it up (after all you can't fight city hall, lol) and paid out of pocket for my visits.
