The Gout Conundrum -- There Must Be An Answer

So follow this logic:

1. A person suffers from gout ...

2. Gout is caused by eating a staple of foods high in purines and protein ...

3. A person is scheduled to have WLS ...

4. WLS requires a high protein diet in order to get the greatest benefit in the first 12 - 18 months ...

I'm confused about how to manage this moving forward.

Here's my plan:

1. Cherry Juice concentrate smoothies in the blender daily ... CJ is a proven treatment for gout
2. Continue to take colchicine and allopurinol along with the Cherry Juice concentrate ...
3. Stay very, very well hydrated ... dehydration spurs an attack
4. Expect a series of attacks ... rapid weight loss will likely spur an attack ...
5. Pray that significant weight loss will bring down uric acid levels and rid me of gout forever ...

OK -- What do you think?

Okay- how many carbs in the cherry juice?  That's going to factor into your plan.  This will determine how many times a day and how much you can have.

You will definitely want to stay hydrated.  My dr wants me to get at least 64 oz a day but I am only managing to get in 24-32 a day.  I find now that I have moved to denser proteins I am only getting 16 oz.

Turkey, scallops, salmon and certain other fish will definitely be out of your diet when you get to that phase.  Try to counter this with more fiber.

Once your weight comes down, your uric acid levels should drop.

What did your dr. say?

I don't have any advise on the diet portion for Gout along with WLS, but I do highly recommend a copper anklet!

My Dad has suffered gout for 30+ years!  I bought him a copper anklet back then and although he laughed at me, but wore it to 'humor' and please his youngest daughter. But it didn't take long for him to tell me it really helped him!  It broke several years ago and he didn't bother with replacing it.  Last year he had another attack, adjusted his diet and fixed the anklet and swears he'll never be without it for long again!

Worth a try, right?  Combined with proper diet of course...

Dude!

Great to see you on the board.  I've been wondering how you've been fairing since our last conversation.  Sorry to hear about your delimma.  I don't know much about Gout.  My dad was just recently diagnosed.  This is informative.  Maybe you can give me some insight for him in days to come
.

Main thing is to take good care of yourself.  That's the main reason for considering WLS in the first place, right?  Do your own research, ask questions and listen carefully to your doctor.  I hope you have a good Dr.  My surgeon is cool but my new primary sucks.
