OT - I want to donate my car. Help?
So I have this clunker. It does not run anymore. And I’ve been researching places to donate it, because many charities accept non-running vehicles. But I keep coming up with these funky quasi-looking charities that seem to take cars, sell them, and donate out to other charities. So I’m not feeling 100% comfortable with that as I don’t know my car (or the resulting money raised from selling it or its parts) is actually helping anybody.
Have any of you donated a car before? Can someone point me in a good direction with a charity? I am looking to off-load this thing this week if at all possible.

Nik,
In my neck of the woods, there is an orginization called Melwood. They provide services to people with developmental disabilities. I know they accept car donations.

Does the Purple Heart take them? I would think there would be lots of veterans organizations that could use it too.

I know Goodwill takes nonrunning cars and I'm pretty sure most high schools with an auto shop would love to have a car to work on. Also Purple Heart car donation program
I went through this a few years ago. I kept coming up with organizations that were more concerned with paying their 'staff' high salaries than they were in actually helping people. The few I found that were acceptable to me, had stipulations with taking vehicles; either they had to run or be under a certain $$ limit for repairs.
My preference was to try to help someone directly so I contacted some of the churches in town. I found one that would come get the van, repair it and either give it free and clear to someone *****ally needed it or they would keep it in the church's possession and loan it to needy folks as needed. I think this is what they did because I see it parked at the church occasionally but I see it driven all over town by different people. So I know it getting used for the purpose I donated it. And the donation was tax deductible, if that matters.

We donated an old clunker to Goodwill years ago. Just make sure that the title gets transferred and keep copies of all the paperwork. Our old car was in an accident after we transferred it and the police department contacted me. Luckly I had all the paperwork to prove the donation. I would still do it again though.
