Introducing myself

Been looking around for a while and decided it's time to jump on into the forum.  I'm six days out from my RNY sugery.  Nervous yet excited about getting a second chance at life.  At the moment I'm suffering through this two-week liquid prep and hoping that I don't feel this level of hunger after the surgery.  Hoping for the best.

Any info about surgery at St. Agnes?  Things I should expect?  Words of wisdom?

Welcome to the MD board :) My name is Allie, I'm 24 and had RNY with Dr. Singh on the 21st of June. Let me start by saying I love Dr. Singh! He's so wonderful and patient. Overall I was pretty happy with St. Agnes. The nurses were generally pretty good, the techs were very attentive and helpful. The hospital itself is older so they're not really set-up properly for bariatric patients. The bathrooms are very small and the toilets are very low to the ground. You may not have a problem with that, though :)
As far as hunger goes, I seriously doubt you'll be hungry after surgery. Most days it's a battle to actually ea****er hasn't been an issue for me, though. It's funny, you can tell when your pouch is empty, but it's more of a psychological hunger. I don't actually get hunger pains.
I wish you all the luck in the world, I believe you're in good hands with Dr. Singh. Congrats!

Welcome aboard!  My surgery at St. Agnes was uneventful; however, the bariatricc nursing staff at St. Agnes leaves much to be desired.  They are extremely overwhelmed with patients, not attentive and don't seem to have any get-up-and-go.  My roomate and I were both disappointed in our care we received.  Many times no one showed up at all to assist  me getting out of bed after surgery and family members had to step in, my IV alarm would go off for up to 45 minutes or so before anyone would come and check it.  Most seem to have an attitude when they enter your room.  I was not impressed.  My son had the same experience but I made sure I was there to supervise the entire thing.  Wishing you an uneventful surgery and speedy recovery.

Welcome Mike - I second what Christy said above, the nurses couldn't give a hoot about you but overall it wasn't really a bad experience I didn't need them too much. I got more attention from the other nurses when I was out walking the halls than from my own nurses.

You'll survive just like the rest of us St. Agnes patient and come out a new person. Have a no fear you won't be hungry at all after surgery the other thing you may have is head hunger, I used to swear I heard my pantry calling me name the first two weeks after surgery, not that I could eat anything it was all in my head but that went away too.

Best of luck to you!

Hi Mike! I absolutely adore Dr. Singh. You are in great hands. However, the nursing staff sucked, to put it bluntly. As for hunger, that's one thing you won't have to worry about. Even at 10 months out, I still don't get hungry the way I did pre-op. Good luck!

Hey Mike! Welcome

I'll be having surgery (soon I hope) at St Agnes too. I guess I didnt do as much research on the hospital as the dr, but hopefully its not too bad.

I dont recall needing too much help when I had my band other than someone to help me get in and out of bed and get those stupid air booties off my feet. Oh..and to give me my pain meds! I had my band at Potomac Hospital in VA and the only problem was the bed was a little short for me...so hopefully the ones at St Agnes are a little longer! LOL

Good luck, Im sure your surgery will go smoothly! Keep us informed.

just sending you good luck wishes! hope the surgery is a breeze. just to make sure you dont have unreasonable expectation, some people still have real hunger after surgery. so if you do, that is ok. just try to watch how much you eat and stick to the guidelines as much as possible. you want to make the most of the first year.
