So i was so happy june 15th to go to McKenna's office and start my 6 months! i have been so excited and trying to get my life straight and practice everything already and reading every book i could!

Insurance had told me and my husband that they coverd it! so we thought nothing of it, also because he has the best plan carefirst offers, so we go there with high hopes! only to get a phone call 2 days later from the office saying that our insurance wont cover it... ok that sucks... but we can fight it right? yes, we go and get answers, the only reason insurance wont cover it is because its not on the plan, which means my husbands work didnt check that as a part of it?
but we can still fight it right?

i have heard of all kinds of people on here that have fought it and have won, so the nurse said it shouldnt be hard, well guess what? they called my HUSBAND not even me from Dr McKEnnas office the other day and told him that they dont even want me to continue being seen by them unless i can pay cash up front for every visit???

i think this is bull**** for a dr that sits there and says he wants to help you...

now im stuck and have no idea what to do? do i just sit here and wait till march when my hsuabnd can have his insurance plan changed? and then start all over again with another dr? or what?

i need your advice everyone! i just do not know what to do, it feels like my whole life just crashed and i cannot cry anymore!

Thanks!

What procedure are you considering?  I also have Care First Blue Choice (Federal, though).  I think in MD, insurance companies are required by law to cover WLS.  (Perhaps I just dreamt that, though.)

Can you go to your husband's benefits department?

in maryland, and company with over 50 employees is required to carry wls as part of their health plan. my BCBS only covered lap band or RNY. i would recheck with your benefits dept and also call BCBS maybe something got mixed up.

As far as I know, at this time, there is no requirement in this state for companies to have wls as a sure thing on their insurance. This is based my experience from last year when I had a different insurance company (BCBS. I now have Aetna).

You always have to do your research with your insurance policy. If you look in the exemptions portion, if it says no weight loss surgery, that's set in stone. If it doesn't, then, you may want to call your insurance company and ask them if they cover it, possibly the doctors office got it wrong.

Amy:

Been there done that,  lol.  But seriously, MD has a law that requires health insurance to cover wls,but there are certain things that over ride this.  Find out what state the policy is goverend by ,this you will find on the certificate of coverage.  Also if wls is listed as an exclusion then it is written in stone.

I went through this a year ago with my former employer.
My policy was governed by the state of California, and it was a written exclusion. I appealled, went to the department of labor, and there was nothing that i could be done.  Now, ironically, I was laid off in January
and i opted for COBRA coverage and when they changed insurance carriers wls is covered.  Go figure, lol

Hope ths helps.  Investigate, investigate all options.

If the employer opted not to include WLS on their health insurance plan, there is nothing you can do to change it.  There is no requirement for an employer to include  WLS as part of their health insurance package in the state of Md.  The employer has the right to specifically EXCLUDE weight loss surgery.  You can simply google the Maryland statute for further information.  Hopefully, your hubby can change his plan during open season and select a plan that incudes the coverage for WLS.  The same thing happened to me several years ago.  The law does not appy to an insurance company which specifically excludes the WLS.
