Hello Everyone,

This is my first time posting on OH. I'm Melissa. I live on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. I'm 29 years old. I've been approved for RNY surgery and my date is on July 26, 2010. I'm getting surgery at the University of Maryland. I'm excited, but I'm so nervous. I'm so tired of people telling me negative things and saying stuff like: "You know people die from this surgery"!  How do you guys handle this?

Hi Melissa and welcome!
I am too from the Eastern Shore! What area are you? I am near Chestertown.
Nervous and excited are normal along with a thousand other emotions! There are some very negative people in regards to the surgery, but dont let them get to you!
I am sending you a PM

Damn haters!  Lol!  Whatever....people die from not getting the surgery at an even higher rate than those who die in surgery.  Some folks will be negative....prepare for it....   I make it clear to everyone that this is the right choice for me and their opinion does not matter....because it does not.

I am also getting surgery at UMMC.  Who is your doctor?

Raina you are so right! I wear my heart on my sleeve so I better be prepared for what people are going to be saying about me. I'll definitely stand up for myself. I told one of my co-workers that this was my decision and if she didn't like it she can kick rocks!!! lol My doctor is Dr. Lo Menzo. I heard Dr. Kilgman is very good. My co-worker's daughter had him and she looks awesome. Good luck with your surgery. I'm sure your excited. Are you on the two liquid diet? How's is that going for you? Keep in touch!

I started off pumped about the liquid diet.....today not so much.  Tired of all those sweet shakes....can't get the taste out of my mouth.   But no need to complain....I am on the countdown now....5 more days to go!

First of all, congratulations and good luck on your journey.

Second, build a thick skin, you'll hear negativity from people even after the surgery. I  stopped tlaking to a couple people who would not let up ons aying I took the easy way out. Nobody else but you and maybe other people on this forum know what you have been through and what made you decide to get this life saving surgery. Just make sure you have a good support system at home/ My husband and my family kept me sane through the process and even now :-)

I will do that. I have a tendency to allow people to hurt my feelings, but I feel that I have a great support system. Thanks for the advice!!! :)
