I received my surgery date- May 25th.  I am so excited but I barely have any energy on this liquid diet.

How do you get over the dizziness and lack of energy?  Also, I'm getting bored on my protein shakes already.  That is not good at all

I never had to do a liquid diet so I can't comment on how to deal with it..

but think about this:  it's a hard thing (for a little while)  and YOU can do hard things...

did you call the doc and discuss that you are dizzy and have no energy?

Sweetie we all have went through that. You will be okay. Are you eating one good meal a day? I was allowed to on my liquid diet. The reason behind the diet is to make sure your liver does not enlarge before surgery. Call your surgeon and double check because you may be able to eat one meal a day. For me it was always dinner because I was skipping breakfast and lunch anyway so the shakes at those times did me GREAT especially if I added the protein to coffee. You will be through this soon and just think of the LIGHT at the end of the tunnel..........ITS WORTH IT SWEETIE!! Keep your chin up! YOU WILL DO GREAT!!!!

I agree with Jilly here about checking on the meal. I did it without the meal but every person is different and your blood sugar levels may be very different than mine. At the very least, perhaps you can add another shake into your day making it 4-6 shakes. If you keep the protein up, it should help. It basically sucks - I just did it in April and I clearly remember how much it stunk...BUT keep your eye on the prize! It's coming soon! You will be on the other side of this in no time and it will be a blink. I promise!!!

The headache should subside in 3-4 days from the start. It did for me at least. Congrats on getting the date! Oh and one more suggestion. Consider getting yourself some Davinci Sugar-free Syrups to go in your shakes. They mix things up a bit. Good luck!

Ive been going through this the past 4 days again by my own choice.  I am on off complex carbs (sugar and anything that turns to sugar)  and I have the same feelings you are having...withdrawl.  Headaches, nausea, dizziness, tired.  For me I am on my 5th day and it's the first day I am not having symptoms.

Stay hydrated (water, crystal light) and if you are allowed tylenol take that.

Your body is essenitally detoxing.  It takes time to get over the hump but it does go away for both pre-op and post-ops!

Don't get me started on protein shakes though...There is only one I can drink post op after going through the pre-op and initial post op liquid stage.

Thank you all for your wonderful replies!  I ended up calling the dr's office and realized that I am not taking in enough calories.  I upped the number of protein shakes a day and taking in 80g of protein now.  The headaches still come and go and I am resting more to save the energy I do have.

Funny story, I was in the pre-surgical testing office today and out of no where just started craving nachos.  I was in PST longer than planned and didn't have anything to drink with me.  As I'm thinking about cheating with the nachos, my nutritionist walks by sees me and asks me if I want to try to protein shake I'll be drinking in the hospital.  That was too funny, she saved me.

So glad you called your Dr and are getting the proper amount of protein now!  I don't understand why they can't be more specific when the tell patients about being on the liquids only diet (clear and full) that it includes minimum protein shake requirements!! I've read this so many times here at OH on the different forums.

Anyway I agree, between not getting your protein and withdrawing from carbs, you've probably been through the worst of it by now.  Glad you didn't get to cave on your craving and was rescued with a protein sample!

Are you having the VGB or VSG? Because even with VSG, head hunger and cravings may not go away post op... and you need to deal and control them.  If you cave, you may experience dumping syndrome, little to no weight loss or worse... weight gain.

On the brighter side, look how close you are now to your surgery!! Woo Hoo!!!

Best wishes for an easy and successful surgery, speedy recovery and rapid results!

Hi Mitzi!

I am having the VSG.  I've been doing okay the last couple of days.  I put in my mind that food will always be there and that the wrong choices have done enough damage.  I have been able to cook for the family without wanting to eat.

I just have to get through tomorrow and my surgery day will be here!
