i went and met with my surgeon yesterday, well the first one ive seen anyhow, i liked him and the offie staff, but i was taken back when he said i did not have to do a sleep study because i answerd no to all of the questions in that area??

i was under the impression it didnt matter if you thought you had trouble sleeping or not, you are supposed to get a sleep study before you get approved for surgery??? just asking did anyone else have this happen? i didnt want to do a sleep study at all but when he said i didnt have to my mind all of a sudden was like WAIT WHAT??? RED FLAG!!!! i want to do one now and see....

Well, I guess as long as you were truthful in your answers, they see no need for one.  They're not cheap and the one thing you don't do during a sleep study is SLEEP.  I would imagine some surgeons and insurance companies don't require it unless a patient has indicated there's an issue, while others have made it mandatory regardless.

I know, I'm a lot of help, right?  LOL

Trust me, you AIN'T missing nothing!!!  Count your blessings - I had to have two!

Nope, not required by all surgeons for all people. I did NOT have one and I feel i had one of the best bariatric surgeons around.

ETA: do not take that as a red flag. May I ask who you saw?

you would know if you had sleep apnea, which is the reason for the study. since you never had a sleep study, and i am presuming you sleep pretty well at night, plus your answers about sleep with your surgeon, you probably dont need it if your doc and insurance dont require one.

i had sleep apnea and i was on the cpap machine. trust me, your not missing anything! plus, the sleep study sucks!

too top it off, the sleep study i had cost the insurance company over 5k!

good luck on your journey!

nope not everyone who has it knows they have it... not till there is a sleep study.

DH had to have one.  I had one 2 years before and doc took my word that the sleep study showed mild apnea....

my personal feeling on this is that I'd rather be safe than sorry...

I had Dr. Gorman and was very pleased with his bedside manner...

If your answers indicated there was no need to be concerned, and he ordered the study anyway, chances are the insurance would've denied it.  It would've been deemed 'not medically necessary, and you would've been stuck paying the bill.

He did recommend one for me, and as it turns out I have sleep apnea.  So count your blessings - you're lucky that you don't have it!

Best of luck to you,
Cyndi

I had to have one done.  My insurance requires it.  Not a big deal though.  I don't think you personally would know if you need one or not, but anyhow I don't know where Smithsburg, MD is, but if you're anywhere near Baltimore you should look at Dr. Li at Sinai.  She's amazing, and was voted number one surgeon in Baltimore magazine.  She was amazing talks to you like your a person, not a number or something.  When I first met her she came up and gave me a hug and welcomed me on my journey...AMAZING!!!!!
