I dind't have to do it. My surgeon's and my humble opinion is that if we could lose weight with a diet, we'd already have done it. There's a reason we looked at surgery as the ultimate intervention.

Edited to add: I think I might be mistaken. I didn't have to do a liquid diet. I had to show a 6 month supervised weight loss attemp. If you've been on a weight loss plan with a clinic, that should count as the attempt most insurances want to see.

our insurance did not require it.  our doc required 3 months pre-op before submittal to insurance.

sometimes it's not the doc that requries it it's the insurance.

my insurance required the 6 months pre op diet.  You'll have to check on your insurance, if you are on a diet plan from a weightloss clinic that might count it did for me, I was doing Jenny Craig and that counted towards my 6 months as it was supervised.

I think most insurance companies require a 6 month diet.  However, it doesn't have to be that current.  Mine was almost 2 years old and it was excepted.  (It was less than 2 years when approved, when I had surgery it was older than that) I think 2 years was the cutoff.  The most important part is that it shows six months of consecutive visits.

My insurance required it and it had to be 6 months total of treatment in the last 24months.  I was able to provide them with the details of the two programs I was in 1. a weight loss program supervised by and M.D. as well as reports from my behavioral nutritionist.

I had surgery in two months after my consult and I could have had it in a month had I chosen to.  Just make sure you are ready.  It all came on so fast for me and it hit me like a ton of bricks!

Keep us posted for sure!  I'm crossing my fingers that what you have been doing will suffice for the ins company and I would also make sure your Dr. is fine with it as well.

My insurance (Empire Care First BCBS) required a documented six month doctor supervised weightloss program OR two 3-month stints with either Weigh****chers or Jennie Craig.

Honestly it was no big deal.  I took that six months to learn everything I could about my surgery, my chosen surgeon, follow up care, etc.  It also gave me six months to get all my pre-op tesiting completed and attend some valuable support groups.  And I am so glad I did.  My cousin was self-pay with his surgery and didn't have to do any pre-op diet or education classes and ended up with a pretty severe complication after surgery that nearly killed him.  Not that it will happen to everyone who didn't do a pre-op program, but he said he wished he had that time.

You'll be surprised at how fast that six months goes, and if you have a doctor supervised plan, it allows your PCP to stay up on your progress and be more involved in your surgical process.

If, as you say in your post, you have followed a meal plan diet from a weight loss clinic for a year, your insurance company will more than likely accept that as your 6 month diet.

I don't know what type of Insurance you have.  I am Kaiser patient and I just finished the 6 month program, did not have a choice.  I believe a lot of insurance is starting to require a 6 month program.   At first it seemed long, but the program I went through was actually very helpful.  Good luck to you.
