Christine, I'm so sorry!

I agree... find another surgeon!  Did he give you specifics why he denied due to your history?  I'm not asking you to tell us, just if you know, you can discuss this issue better next time with a new dr.  Not lie, I'd never suggest you lie.

Best wishes to you on your search for a new and more supportive and caring surgeon!

ten years ago i had a really severe psychological breakdown that resulted in developing dissociative identity disorder..there, i said it..lol.  thru medication and lots of therapy i overcame. in an effort to be honest, i mentioned this to the social worker doing my psych eval.  she told me that she had to include it in her remark but she also believed that i understood what i was doing and my mental health shouldnt be an issue.

dr. k saw that and his rational was to explain about the stats on folks who develop depression post op.  im thinking "so what?" i treat this like i did my pregnancy, work with my therapist and develop a plan.  keep my butt in therapy for as long as necessary.  no big whoop.

i will say this, despite this setback, i still do think Dr. K is a competent surgeon and i think if anyone wants to consider someone who isnt going to b-s them, he is the right one.

i did call his office back because i feel like he owes me a bit more of an explanation.  hopefully i will get that.  in the meantime, i will look for someone else.

I wasn't prying... but maybe it's good to get it more out in the open.  The more you can positively speak of your past issues, perhaps the more the surgeon will be confident you can handle the emotions you may go through post-op.

That would be great if they will give you more details, as I do believe the more you know - the better prepared you are for your new surgeon.  I also believe honesty is the best policy and I've always been an open book too - sometimes I tell too much!

Keep positive, keep working with your therapist and keep searching for the right surgeon for you!

thanks mitzi, i have no problem being open about my mental health history.  i was being overly cautious and dramatic.  thanks for the good wishes.  i do hope that by my 40th bday i can reach this goal.

I just had my RNY with Dr. Mo at GBMC, I did not have a program fee at all, just copays from my insurance.  He is a great doc, man of few words but good surgeon.  Both my husband and I used him.  I think you should try another Bariatric Surgeon and I bet you would have another outcome.  Good luck and don't give up until you get the results you want.

just as an fyi,

GBMC has 2 surgeons, dr Peter Liao and Dr.  Babak Moeinolmolki. GBMC is near Towson. My surgeon is Dr. Liao, and of course i think he is awesome, but i think everyone would say thier surgeon is great. Lots of people say Dr. Mo is awesome too. i have met him and he seems very nice and professional.

their program fee is 500.00

hope this info helps

I'm currently seeing Dr Mo, and am in the 4th month of my 6 month supervised weight loss.
Dr Mo is very thorough, and straight to the point. I've heard nothing but good things about both him and Dr Liao
I also like the staff there a lot. They're all very personable.

Also, I don't think that they have a program fee anymore.......or, if they do my insurance must have covered it because I haven't had to pay one (yet? let's hope they don't spring it on me in the next couple of months..ha!)

welp,

a quick update to say that i am pressing on and i went to see another surgeon.  he was very nice as was his staff.  i was a bit concerned that he made an assessment as to the surgery he thinks i should have based on a brief convo and my records.  he does a LOT of surgeries so that was good to hear.  stil debating.........
