An Insurance Question

Well I thought I was all done with insurance issues, but of course that can't be true.  I am scheduled for my 3 mos NUT visit at Hopkins next Monday and got a message from them last night that Blue Choice doesn't cover nutrionist visits other than for diabetes education.  This makes no sense to me.  Call it simplistic but it seems like if you have to cover the surgical procedure, you should have to cover all the neccessary follow up treatment?  Has any one faced this issue before.  Does anyone/everyone have coverage for their NUT visits, or is this a common issue?  I don't know for sure, but I have a fear that paying this out of pocket is going to be a hefty expense.

I have BCBS too, and no, my NUT visits, behavioral visits or exercise visits are not covered.  My practice has a $1,000 program fee to cover all my subsequent appointments, and its due before surgery.  Covers NUT, exercise specialist, and behavioral therapy for 3 years post op.

My psych eval wasn't covered either.

Our NUT visits are part of our program fee that we paid prior to surgery.

you may want to call ur insurance and see if you can get reimbursed if you send in a claim. either way call them and see if they will cover it if you tell them the reason for the visit.

This is  common, unfortunately, insurance does not pay for nutritional visits for this surgery, only for diabetes education. I am sorry that you are going through but it's part of the process. Remember that the surgery itself is an "elective" surgery. If it's any consolation, no insurances pay for nutritional follow-ups that I am aware of. Hope you are doing well otherwise.-valerie

I think most Nutritionist, as well as the Psych. consults, are NOT covered.  My Dr. office told me that, in advance.  Good luck.

They were not covered by my insurance - but the first visit of $150 covered me up until and for a year after surgery (tomorrow!!!)...

I have not seen her since my one visit preop I must admit...

i had a program fee was 500 before surgery, and that covered the nut visits  before surgery. i have had my 1wk, 1m, 3m, visits, and my doc or nurse practicioner went over any nutrional info with me. i still can call my nut with any questions though, and there isnt any charge for that.

i have bc/bs hmo insurance.

I just seen my  NUT on the 17th and she said she wants to see me after my surgery but it's not covered by my insurance so it's out of pocket which sucks... I'm going to get my PCP to give me a referral and see if that does it.
