Hello everyone,

I am new to this site, I'm actually new to the whole wls idea I have been big-boned (as people like to call it) most of my life. I have been on every diet know to man from Atkins to south beach to grapefruit to cabbage soup and i always lose the weight but i always gain it back plus some. I always pretended to be the happy outgoing person who wasn’t bothered by her weight or the attention I received because of it(most of my weight is in my chest no further explanation needed im sure lol!) and for the most part that was true as i am from a family of mostly obese individuals so its the norm. it wasn’t until a bad break up that caused me to gain 45lbs in 4 months, bouts with severe depression and the subsequent counseling made me realize that my weight was a huge problem, that was slowly and not so slowly killing me. I am 26 years old with sleep apnea and depression as well as borderline diabetes and back and joint pain. I was becoming more and more withdrawn and that made me sad which made me eat etc. I finally decided that I couldn’t take it anymore and I started seeing a psychiatrist for depression and looking into more permanent methods of weightloss I have done a lot of research and decided that the lap-band is the best procedure for me. I am aware that it is not a miracle cure and that it will be hard and I will have to adhere to a strict diet that I am fine with, my biggest reason for wanting to do this is so that I can have a place to start a food conscience so to speak so that I can learn to eat healthy and break my dependency on food.

Hi Nikki! Welcome! Your story sure does sound familiar to me.  Well, you are taking the right steps to learn more about whether this is the right choice for you. There is a lot of good info on here. I recommend picking up a copy of "Weight Loss Surgery For Dummies" at the bookstore or library ASAP! A to Z...everything you need to know including some very important steps like learning about your insurance coverage, choosing a surgeon and the tests you will have to take to ready yourself.

Best of luck! Hope to see you around the MD board!

Welcome Nikki,
I think it's wonderful that  you decided to be pro active about your depression first, followed by WLS.  I  am a 100% believer that you can't fix your body without fixing your mind.  Most of the time they go hand in hand. Try and  stay with the therapy as long as you can, it really makes the journey that much easier and cohesive. I wish you luck with your life changing choices. Keep us posted. All the best, Leslie:)

Hello Nikki and welcome.
I think you will find this site is absolutely wonderful.....lots and lots of people with lots and lots of ideas and opinions.
I have found it very helpful.  My surgery is March 25th with Dr Averbach.
It took me 7 months just to find a Dr and I was able to do so by reading posts on this site.  My next step was to figure out which weight loss tool would better suite me and my lifestyle and which one I would be able to adapt into my New Life of Weight Loss and being healthy.
Everyone here is so supportive, it is awesome.  I love coming on the site and just reading the pros and cons of the surgery itself.  Make sure you check out the failed surgery site too, just make sure you research both the good and the bad before you choose whatever surgery you end up choosing.
I am hoping to post as I go along, so feel free to check my blog.

Good luck with your journey and welcome to the Maryland board.  Pull up a chair, grab a protien drink and make yourself at home.

2010 is my year!!!!
It is time for ME to take control of my life instead letting my weight control it!!!!!!!!!

Welcome Nikki,

I'm 25 (about to be 26) and also in MD so I wanted to say hello. I've been thinking about this for 8 years but just started down the path for real in December. I'm now 9 days out from surgery (also getting lap band.)

I wish you the best of luck, and I'm hoping to gain some 20-something friends going through this locally so it's doubly nice to meet you.

Highest Wt: 274 / LAP-Band Low: 180 / Sleeved at 233 / Goal: 160!
