Sick as a dog....

Seriously, Sunday morning I think I asked God to take me....that's how bad I felt.

I woke up and went to an early church service, which started at 8....my church doesn't start until 10. I had some Propel water, and a granola bar....half a granola bar. Through service I chewed sf gum. Everything was fine until the church let out. Around 10:30, I started having stomach cramps...sorta similar to when you have stomach virus, or your stomach is sour (I know that sounds gross). At first it was like maybe once an hour, but by the time I got home....it was constant. It hurt soooo freaking much. All I could do is thrash around the bed. I kept feeling like I needed to throw up, but the problem with that was, I hadn't eaten anything, so that wasn't a good idea to me. Eventually I started anyway, and couldn't stop. OMG, Ive never felt anything so horrible in my life...I've had 3 kids...one of them natural. I have no idea what did this to me. When I starting spitting up, it was tinged with blood, then it was just clear. I didn't call the nurse Sunday, but I did call her yesterday. She said it could have been the granola bar, but no telling what it really could have been to upset my stomach like that. When I say I'm scared to put anything in my mouth right about now, I am.

At this point, I was thinking of reverting back to just liquids. I asked the nurse and she said that was fine, just try to keep it light. What else can I try. Last night all I had was liquids 2 fruit cups and cream of wheat. Today I've just had liquids.....

ok so at 4 weeks out you ate a granola bar?   Was the propel water sugar free?  did it have sugar alcohols.   those make lots of folks dump.

Sounds like you dumped.  sounds also like you irritated your pouch.

go back to basics.   broths, herb tea, water,  watered down fruit juices (clear ones).. then slowly add back soft foods.

Yeah, it was sf propel, and the granola bar, I'm sure had sugar in it, but not alot. I had the other half of it the day before.

It was just a really weird episode, that lasted the entire day. I didn't think you could dump for so long. Even when  i threw up, it didn't have any granola in it (the nurse did ask me that).

I do think I'll just stick to basics for this week and see what happens.

when my husband dumps it's like 2 hours after he eats something with sugar alcohols in it.

not sure which propel you had but they have sugar and sugar alcohols in them...   mixed with the granola bar they could have made you sick.

also sometimes things make you sick one day and not another.

I know from friends on the main board that they can feel crummy after a dumping episode for days...

rest up  stick to the basics and recover....

Honeybare:

I would also watch the sugar free gum.  I've been reading recently that the malitol and sorbitol in sugar free gums are sugar alcohols and anyone with even the slightest sensitivity to them (me) can get into trouble.  I get nauseated, bloated, serious abdominal cramps, sweats, salivation like I'm gonna hurl and praying to God that I would just to make it feel better.  The chewing also makes you swallow air, increasing the gas pain and bloating.

Just take it easy and listen to the great advice of the RNY vets on here.  They won't steer you wrong.

Propel (the ready to drink, I don't know about the powder) doesn't have sugar alcohols in it anymore.  They changed the formulation when they changed the bottle.  It's sweetened with Splenda, Ace K, and a small amount of real sugar.  It's about 2g per 8oz serving, so not enough to make you dump unless you have ZERO sugar tolerance.  But I guess it might have had some kind of reaction with the granola bar.

Thanks Ladies...

I seriously didn't know that was a dumping spell. I never want that to happen again.
And your right about the Propel water, they do have more sugar than I'm use too. So, we're crossing those off the list. I'll be giving those to my daughters to drink, they love them.

I still have so much to learn. Initially I thought it could have been the water, because when I got home last night and took a sip on one I had in the fridge, I started feeling a little funny, and I decided to leave it alone.

U live and learn I guess, but I swear I don't want that to happen again!

Well, you live and you learn...that's part of the journey, right?  Sorry, you had to go through it though.  Just like the others have said...baby your pouch for a few days!

I avoid granola bars at all costs.  They tend to be full of sugar, and you are still pretty early out, so not only do they have sugar, but they aren't the best choice for someone who has a pouch that is still healing.  Sounds to me as if you stressed it out big time.

As with the others, I'd say stick to bland liquidy foods for a while.

I dump on sugar alcohols.  I don't dare try anything with more than 7g of sugar in a serving either as I don't want to know if I dump on sugar.

Feel better!
