having surgery- family lives out of state
REALIZE Band on 02/09/10 with
I was finally approved for lap band surgery and my date is next week. My family lives far away so I asked my friend to take me/pick me up. Will it be awkward or miserable without having family there? I've never had surgery before so I don't know what to expect.
Kim, There are some good people here and I am sure we all can help support you. I am sure it will be awkward not having family here. Can any of them come? Sometimes friends are like family and I hope that this is the case for you. I am sure you are nervous and that is to be expected. Are you able to contact your family by phone? If so I hope you will be in contact with them. Usually when you have surgery you pick someone to be your angel and they help with communication and I guess other things if you so desire. I wish you well and hope others will chime in on this as I have not had WLS yet.
There is a really nice lady named Nikki and I think she had Lap band and lives in Gaithersburg. I hope she will see this and reach out to you. Her screen name is Nikki C. Good luck.

Hi Kim and Welcome to the Md board,
I am in the same situation as you. I have no family in the state, but I do have wonderful friends. I had VSG, and the recovery was pretty easy, and I did have someone stay @ my home for 3 days, and honestly I could have had someone for 1.5 days, 3 days was really too much. I had friends that stopped by, and brought me things, but I was very fortunate my WLS was smooth sailing. I really do not know what the recovery is with the lap band. I would think if you had 2 good friends that you could count on, between the 2 of them, they should have no problem taking care of you. Try and put a feeler out to anyone that used your Dr, or that lives near you. I am sure they could advise you better what is available to you. I wish you luck with your journey, keep us posted! Leslie:)

I like you had family who were out of state... My parents came to stay the night before surgery to take me to the hospital... They stayed over night after I got home (I also had hubby here with me...) Once I got home I was pretty much okay on my own - I did have trouble getting in and out of the recliner on my own because I couldn't use my stomach muscles to scoot up to put the feet down, etc. You will also need someone to drive you the first week or so - and to your first post op appointment, home from the hospital, etc.
Good Luck!! If there is anything we here can do, please ask!!
