Thinking of transitioning into vegetarianism/veganism

I've been eating alot better in terms of processed carbs for a month now and have lost some weight but really not losing like I thought I would. So I thought maybe I'm not eating right for my body and started looking at what  do eat the most of. I eat alot of dairy/meats and a good amount of veggies. I don't eat many legumes or nuts, which are great sources of protein. I don't eat many whole grains either. I can not eat anything w/ soy or gluten so that already limits my eating. But i'm thinking of transitioning away from eating alot of dairy/animal proteins to the proteins in legumes/nuts/veggies/whole grains. I was watching how they slaughter chickens and it horrified me and i don't know if i can eat chicken anymore knowing how they kill it. I may try to find chicken that is kosher? Not sure if they have slaughter chicken kosher or not.

Does anyone eat minimal animal products w/ health benefits? confused how to proceed. Definitely slowly though LOL.

I am very sure you can find kosher chicken. Find a kosher deli near you and they'd be able to help you.

Beyond that, I couldn't help ya; I live off of my meats. Couldn't give them up at the threat of death.

You might want to discuss this with your surgeon/nutritionist as well. I am sure they've had vegetarian/vegan patients and could steer you in the right direction.

You are definitely going to need to eat more of the vegetarian choices to get your protein in,. for example a 100 gm of kidney beans have 21 gm protein whereas a 100 gm chicken breast has 45 gm. As you are transitioning, you might want to up on some protein supplement.

Good luck and keep us updated on the journey :)

yea if i do this, i will do it slowly and not completely change to non animal proteins. i may keep certain fishes in my diet or spend more money for kosher foods. not really sure yet where i'm going to go w/ it. i was told that i would have to eat alot more if i was strictly vegan. not sure that's a bad thing considering i used to be a binge eater LOLOL. if i did vegan i couldn't use any of the protein supplements unless they were nut or grain based. i'll be doing alot of trying out different things. we'll see what happens.

I've been a vegetarian for 10 years.  A nurse once said any woman would kill for my cholesterol and I was thinking, yes but not my big butt.  My problem is too many carbs.

If you can't eat soy you might have a hard time since a lot of veg products have soy.  Morningstar makes great fake chicken, the nak'd fake chicken is horrible.

yea i have no plans on eating veggie products that try to mimic animal products. that is processed and has soy so not healthy. might as well just eat the protein if i'm gonna do that LOL. I think i may start slowly adding more legumes/grains that have protein into my diet so i dont shock my system and in the meantime spend the extra time and money to buy kosher products until I can transition out.

we still slaughter them... kosher or not we gotta kill them.

I know vegans who are not surgically comprimised and they can't get enough protein so they switched back to being vegetarian....

if you can't eat soy that leaves out tofu...
if you have no dairy and no tofu you have many many many limits...

I do not think that necessarily this is a GREAT plan...

yea i am still working out the bugs. i may not be strict and eat limited amounts of all kinds of things but more veggies, legumes and whole grains. I don't think i'm gonna be crazy bout it but i do want to reduce the amount of animal products i eat. i found a brown rice protein that may be good for supplementation, though not sure which brand yet. yea and as for kosher, i realize you can't get around the whole killing thing. but maybe kosher means they actually have a decent life before they die and there is limited suffering. i have lots of things to figure out. i know though that i'm gonna make changes. we'll see how things go. i won't sacrifice my health for it though.
