X-Post: Cholesterol & Triglyceride Levels

Hi Everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone else has seen their cholesterol and triglyceride levels increase over time since surgery.  My levels are worse than when I was 72 pounds heavier.  It may just be me, my genetics, as both of my parents had issues.  My cholesterol went from 170 to 195 and triglycerides jumped from 152 to 172 (meanwhile my husband who eats much more saturated fats and hydrogenated oils than I do is at cholesterol of 172 and triglycerides are 80).

I do know that now that I am closer to my goal, I feel the need to ramp back on the meat protein and concentrate my sources more on beans and nuts, and increase my good carbs.  I haven't had any bread since a month before my surgery, mostly because I was severely carb-addicted, and I am afraid of getting stuck on it as well.  I get whole grains from oatmeal and Kashi, but am wondering if I should try having a piece of dry toasted whole grain bread occasionally.

Thoughts?  Thanks.

Terri

Terri i have no idea what to tell you but I would think oatmeal would help.  I don't do grains now but my cholesterol is dropping it was 227 before surgery and it was 129 at 3  months out...

have you asked your PCP what  s/he thinks?

Hi Nessa,

I haven't spoken with my PCP because after being with him for 20 years, he decided to specialize in endocrinology at Upper Chesapeake as of the first of the year and I have to find a new doc.  Dr. Moein didn't seem overly concerned about it, but given my family history, and my husband just getting his great results, it just caused me to wonder, and to think about what I can be adjusting.

Thanks!

I have whole grain bread just not everyday.  It is healthy and good for you. Having oatmeal is good to lower your cholesterol.  I would discuss it with your nutritionist first just to see what he or she says.

Good luck sweetie.  I hope you are able to lower your chol/trigs asap.

Hugs,
Cira
