with this cold bitter winter we are having I was wondering if you guys like to do soups and stews.

We like THICK soup at our house.  Homemade of course...

my favorites  are all pretty much the same:

lentil with hotdog
15 bean with ham
split pea and barley with ham

all have celery onions and carrots in them...

all cook on my stove in a big stock pot ALL DAY

then I freeze them in single serving sizes in zipper sandwich bags...

now chili (with beans) goes in the big containers.... we eat a ton of that too..

what soups and stews do you like?

This weekend I made a kickass pot of beef stew with onions, carrots, celery, and red potatoes

I also make a good curried lentil stew, cabbage and sausage stew, chicken soup, chili...I am working on a homemade less fat/carbs clam chowder but am not quite there yet.

OH! And I make a very good butternut squash and carrot soup.

see that's my problem when I make soup I don't use exact amounts...

but here's my fav:

1 bag of green split peas
1 cup of pearled medium barley
one large yellow onion cut up (small dice is fine I use my chopper)
lots of baby carrots cut up (can use regular carrots i just always have baby carrots) can dice or slice
some celery stalks (stings and leaves removed) cut small
4 cups of beef broth (or water with boullion) (to start  you will have to add more water as needed)
diced meat of your choice (I like ham but sausage would work) about 2 cups
seasonsings ... I like GARLIC and pepper.
could also use a couple of drops of liquid smoke and may need to add more sald if the beef broth is not salty

put everything in a big pot... make sure that the water is at least 1-2 inches above the level of the peas and barley and veggie and meat maixture) bring to a low bowl and stir a bit.
reduce the heat to a low simmer... stir occasionally.  cook at least 2 hours or longer (seriously i cook it 3-5 hours) the green peas will break down and get creamy eventually... the carrots will become soft... that's how i Know it's done.. when I stir it and the broth is green and thicker... not like broth any more....

my grand mother made this soup without the ham and I just found out my aunt makes it now and they call it  "mommy's soup"

I"m having it for dinner tonite.
