Hi Linda,

You know, there was a section on the post-study questionnaire I filled out that said something like "Skip this section if you had an in-home study". Got me thinkin...I'm going to look into this!! Thanks!

Laura,

Sorry you had such a bad time I think it all depends on the tech you get.  I have been there three times and everytime I have had a great tech that explained everything and did not use a ton of that jell.  I just went back the week before Thanksgiving and was told that I no longer have sleep apnea.  If you have to go back you really should even though this time may not be good either since you will have to sleep with the cpap machine, I remember when I did it and I just could not breath and than finally the tech told me to just go to sleep and let my mouth stay open and eventually when i feel asleep my mouth did close.  I had bad sleep apnea and for the first two months I never used the machine until I read an article in my doctors office about a lady who husband died from not using his cpap at that time a light went off and I realized how serious this was and that I could die at anytime, since than I never went to bed with out it and was so greatful when the doctor said I didnt have to use the cpap anymore.  It will get better in time just dont take any chances.  Good luck and hope things get better for you.   Lois

HI Lois - thanks so much for your supportive message. I have to get a new perspective on all of these tests (not just the sleep study). Rather than looking at the tests as "ways to find more things wrong with me", I should be seeing all these experiences and issues I'm set on resolving. Being a healthier me. I need to learn more about sleep apnea too...

Thanks again! I appreciate all these positive messages! Helps a lot.

I feel your pain! I did the sleep study twice - once to diagnose the sleep apnea, and then once for the CPAP. Worst 2 nights ever!

I'm so sorry you had a bad experience,  When I went for mine,  I was allowed to pick my time to sleep, I had a private sound proof room with a fan if I got too hot, I had a tv...  and no one came in unless I called for them.

ugh.   I guess every place is different.

I'm so so sorry it was so bad.

darn shame the doc did not order a split study for you, they you would only have to do one night they would fit the CPAP in the second half of the study.

Nice pic Nessa!!! I was about to respond to a new person on here...and I looked at the name and it's you!!!  Lookin good girl! Keep it up!

Yeah I think I chose unwisely as far as sleep centers. Oh well...when I go back Tuesday night I'm going to go armed with things I'll know I need (like a water bottle with a STRAW so I can actually drink around that thing hanging out of my nose!!)

Also, my significant other brought this to my attention recently. I tend to "wig out" at night when I'm stressed out. Or so I thought. So just in case you all didn't think I was crazy enough, now you know that. haha So,  I was reading a bit about sleep apnea and the nightime freak outs can be a side effect when you stop breathing. You panic and think it's a lucid dream but it's deep rooted in panic because you can't breath. Learn somethin new everyday.  I think this mask may help my partner sleep better at night at least!

I went through 4 sleep studies before finally having a successful one.  I too had trouble sleeping and could not get comfy.  Different sleep clinics have different staffs and some are more comfy than others.  As far as the heat in the room.  Tell them you are hot.  In my opinion it is their job to make you comfortable.  They are providing a service and there are plenty of other places willing to do it if they won't work with you.  For my successful study I was in a comfy place....with a comfy bed...and I had them give me a sleeping pill.  My study was completed in one night and I absolutely love my cpap machine.  I now sleep better...feel better..and hardly ever need to nap anymore.  Hang in there and good luck next week.

Hi Teresa!

You know what, you're 100% right. That is part of the experience. Especially considering how naturally uncomfortable the experience is in an of itself! I'm going into the next one with more confidence to ask for what I need. The next day when one of the daytime folks called me to confirm my 2nd appointment I told her some of the things that made it a bad experience and she said that my complaints were common complaints for other patients. I definitely chose the wrong place (in hind sight). Oh well. I don't want to start over somewhere else. Just have to keep my focus on the future...

Thanks for the support!

One more thing about cpap I have learned.  I went to my local Roberts Home Medical to get my machine.  They will also come to you but I chose to go there.  I tried on a ton of cpap masks until I found one I THOUGHT I could live with(I am very claustrophobic and could not stand anything covering my whole face).  Well after a week  I knew I had picked the wrong mask so I read everything I could on cpap masks and found another I wanted to try.  I called them and they sent me my next choice at no cost.  They were very willing to work with me until I was happy.  It was an adjustment getting used to cpap and learning how to prevent air leaks and stuff but it has been one of the best investments in my health.  I am amazed at how tired I always was before.  Now as soon as I put the cpap on I am ready for sleep.  I suspect even once I lose weight I will have apnea since I have snored horribly since I was a young child but thats ok because I found a solution I can live with.  Oh and hubby loves it even more than I do because I don't keep him awake anymore.
