Anyone have insurance through the State of Maryland as an employee or dependent?  I know WLS is covered, I'm just looking to hear about your experience.

I work for the State and have the BCBS PPO plan. My experience was a piece of cake. They required the 6 month doctor supervised diet and a psych evaluation. Once that was done, my approval was back in less than a week. I didn't have to pay a penny out of pocket for the surgery.

I have it through the State of Maryland - it was fairly easy for me, 6 month supervised diet (which wasn't covered); the psych evaluation (which wasn't covered either) but the surgery was approved on the 1st letter, and I had no copays.  The psych and the diet - I got reimbursed through the SHPS (health care savings account)

I have BCBS PPO insurance.

Good luck!

Mommaclay, you should have no problems.  The state of Maryland does cover surgery for their employees as long as you meet the criteria of BMI, 6 month diet and psych.

I definitely am not worried about having it approved; I know it's great insurance!  I guess I'm hung up about the 6 month supervised diet.  I track my food/intake on sparkpeople.com...have been doing so on and off for years now.  But I'm wondering if they'll accept that if my doctor signs off/writes a letter.  I've done weigh****chers but on my own (ie: tracked my points because I have the books).

Cathy-I will be calling your office some time after the holidays to get things started to come in for a 1st meeting with Dr. Singh.  My husband and I really liked his presentation last month at the seminar.

BCBS typically won't take a summary letter- I would share your food diary with your physician to show him what you've done.  We have a form on Dr Singh's website that should help with the documentation part.

Good luck and I look forward to meeting you next month!
