I am back after a second hospital stay!

Hi Everyone!  As most of you know I had my RNY on Nov 13th.  Things started going down hill for me as the week progressed.  Long story short, it turns out that my overly sensitive esophagus became irritated when my doctor decided to do a few extra things and the length of time for my surgical procedure was extended to 5 hours.  The irritation, made my esophagus feel like I had a pill ulcer and was expanding each time I would eat or drink something.  The constant feeling of needing to belch made me unable to take in the required fluids.  I went to the ER Thursday and was admitted, re-hydrated, treated for a urinary tract infection and had an upper GI.  It was a good thing I went and I can't say enough for the true concern and responsiveness of my doctor.

Another thing which seems to becoming apparent is my intolerance for the Protein additives.  I keep feeling nauseous and start belching each time I drink one.  I think I read that someone else on this board had that problem  I bought a ton of Unjury and two other brands of Whey not to mention 6 SF Syrups to make the protein drinks.

What I need help with is - besides Greek yogurt, what mushies should I try to add to my diet each day to help me keep up my protein without drinking the protein shakes .

I would also like to send a big thank you to TIA, who I contacted in desperation on Thursday.  She was my angel.    I am determined to get through this and pray that my sensitive body will straighten itself out in time.   Pam

I'm sorry you had such a rough time, but I'm glad you are home now!

I don't get enough food during the day, so I have to supplement with the shakes, but I did find the Myoplex lite when down the best.  I also found if I drank it warm it helped.

For mushies - I eat a lot of egg beaters, laughing cow light cheeses, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, refried beans.  I made a big pot of chili, so that I only had to make one meal for the house, and just threw mine in the food processor.  I made it with lean ground beef, black beans and kidney beans.  It was so good.

Take your time and sip sip sip and get better soon!

oh Pam I am so sorry to hear you are having a hard time.

as for the protein,  have you tried either soy or egg protein as it may be the dairy in the whey protein that's causing you all the problems?  sometimes folks become lactose intolerant after surgery.  and sometimes lactose intolerant folks can still do yogurts....

meanwhile things like  fat free refried beans with melted cheese..   mashed fish (I preferred crab during the pureed stage)... with mayo...

I am SOOOOOOOOO glad to hear that you're better; I was really worried about you.  The beautiful thing about the mushies is that they don't last forever.

Here are a few ideas:

Cottage cheese with s/f preserves or nsa (no sugar added) apple butter

Greek yogurt - you can sweeten with Splenda and add the s/f preserves, or, if you leave it plain, it tastes like sour cream and can be used that way.  I use it plain to top chili, black bean soup - anything with a little bit of heat.

Ricotta cheese - You can, again, make this sweet or savory - Sweeten with Splenda, add cocoa powder - chocolate cannoli filling.  You can add cinnamon, too or the s/f preserves.  If you want it savory, you can make a noodless lasagna - season the ricotta with Italian seasonings and/or garlic salt and top with spaghetti or pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese and parmesan cheese.

Refried beans - Top with salsa, cheese and Greek yogurt

Pureed shrimp salad - Saute some shrimp in olive oil and seafood seasoning or garlic, puree with some mayo

Pureed chicken salad - Use a rotisserie or canned chicken, add some mayo and seasonings and puree.  Also, for a Mexican twist, add salsa and shredded cheese.

Ham salad - Same as above

Bean soups - Just puree the chunks out of them.  Black beans are especially high in protein.

Taco slop - Ground beef seasoned with taco seasoning, add salsa, cheese and Greek yogurt.

Of course, if you need ANYTHING, please call me!!!

Hugs,

Tia

Pam,

Sorry to hear of the issues you had.  Hope you feel better real soon.

I had difficulty with protein shakes making me nauseous in the beginning until I found Max Protein.  Hate to sound like a broken record, but this works well for me.  It's pricey, but I use it now because it works.  Perhaps when I'm start to run low, I will again try Body Fortress....but for now, I'm using what works.  Hopefully, you will find something that works for you too.

I ate a lot of Amy's Organic refried beans with Greek yogurt, which I got at Giant.  Chicken liver worked good for me too during the mushy phase.

Good luck to you and here's wishing you a speedy recovery!

Debbie

you might want to try egg white protein which doesn't have any additives. you have to add them yourself but at least you have control. go to netrition.com and search for now egg protein. it is cheap and i highly recommend itl.

Pam,

I can't add anything to what's already been suggested for mushies, except that I make protein smoothies with greek yogurt.  I add skim milk, fruit, splenda and protien powder but you could forego the protein powder since it seems to be causing you issues.  You still have the protein from the milk and yogurt.  If you cannot do pureed fruit yet, the s/f syrups are a great way to flavor them, as well as extracts.

Sorry you had to go through that and I hope you are feeling better everyday!
