Hi!

I live in Halethorpe and commute to Rockville, MD (just outside of DC)- it's not the greatest commute, but like Sylvie was saying-- the cost of living is much better here.  The MARC train is actually very close to here as well.

Good luck in your search and welcome!

Hello Dave55, I welcome you to the MD board. I live in Crofton and there are some nice places here. You can hop on route 50 and go to DC or go to New Carrolton Metro right off of route 50 and be in DC in a short time.  I wish you well on your decisions.

Hello Dave, welcome to Maryland , My husband and I lived in College Park , it is a very nice area to live in, we were renting an apartment  it was pretty pricey for a 1 bedroom, but it was worth it, it was in a gated community and secure buildings, and it was not far from D.C., we are no longer in Maryland as of November 2, my  husband and I moved to Wisconsin because he also excepted a new job, my doctor was Dr.Singh , and he is a very nice doc, Good luck with your move .....

Thank you for your responses. You've given me some perspectives that will be very helpful. I look forward to meeting some of you after the move.

1. Are there any advantages or disadvantages to living in Maryland vs Virginia?

MD may have higher taxes but we do not have a personal property tax which VA has. VA is way more congested than MD.

2. What area do you live in and why do you like or dislike it? If you didn't live where you currently do, where in the DC area would you like to live, and why?

I live in Southern MD which doesn't have a Metro stop, but does have a commuter bus line into the city. The farther down in SoMD that you go the nicer the lifestyle. Less traffic, bigger houses etc. But less convieniences, like shopping malls and mass transit. But we do have water the Patuxent River, Chesapeake Bay & Potomac Rivers and that is always nice. Lots of Fishing, boating, crabbing.

If I could at this time in my life, I am 47 and no kids. I would live in DC or Bethesda. Just to be in the mix of things. But both of these areas are cost prohibited. But they offer so much in way of entertainment, cultural exibits, museums and dining. They just have a cool vibe.

3.  All roads lead into DC in the Metro area and all of them are very congested. But much less so than the roads leading into DC from VA.

Good Luck - This is a nice area and a great place to live.

Hi Dave, and WELCOME to the area!  I've lived in both Va. & Md. Virginia is extremely expensive, prices and especially TAXES!!!  You pay taxes, each year, on ALL your properties, cars, etc.  It's extremely crowded with many people NOT knowing how to drive, but doing it anyway!!  The cost of living is so high, both husband & wife find it necessary to work.  Traffic is HORRIBLE, in any direction.  There are so many Maryland locations that are easier to get to the D.C. area, as they're less crowded and definitely less expensive.  You could choose a location, off Rt. 50, putting you near D.C. and Annapolis, being able to draw from the recreational events, from both areas.  You'll love the Ocean City resort, which is approx. 2 hr. drive, from the Annapolis area, 3 hrs. from the D.C. area.  It's one of the East coasts best family resorts (although it's rather stormy, at the moment! LOL!)

Wherever you "plant your roots", I hope you and your family will be happy.  You can see, in the postings, different area Dr. for all the areas, just please choose wisely!

Take care, and good luck!
Ginger
