nope not everyone....   DVR does not.  I know that Dr. A does for some folks but not others.  has to do with liver shrinking I think...

No required liquid diet for me, but since I'll be off my insulin prior to surgery, I elected to do it with my surgeon's blessing.

All that was required was nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before.

I have Dr. McKenna.

Dr. A did my surgery and at first I wanted RNY than changed to VSG.  I had a fatty liver but he never made me go on a liquid diet.  Good luck with your surgery you will be in good hands.

No it is is not required by every doctor. But it also depends on how much weight they need you to lose before surgery if you are morbidly obese.  DVR only put in on a liquid diet the day before the surgery.

Good luck with everything Dr. A is great. He took care of me when I ended up in hospital with abdominal pain. He was covering for DVR while he was away in Texas.  He repaired a hernia I had and he did an awesome job!   You are in excellent hands.

Best Wishes!

No liquid diet for me either.  If he feels your liver needs shrinking, he will require the liquid diet.  Obviously, your liver is just fine.

My surgeon didn't even require me to lose weight, so no kind of diet before surgery for me.

Good luck to you!!! I am glad you researched in all.  As long as you and your doctor are happy with your decision then it's great!

Congrats on your switch.

Let me sum up my journey. Pre surgery BMI was 38 with comorbidities.

I have two friends who have LB, that was my first direction. My Endo suggested that if I was going to have WLS I should go all the way, (not LB) so I then started doing a lot of reading and started to think Duodenal Switch. I went to Dr Averbachs seminar, and to Dr Vanguris seminar. I made an appt with Dr A, talked to him, he does not do DS, he said I should keep my appt with Dr V and talk to him. Dr V said I wasn't big enough for DS and said RNY was better for me. I decided to go with Dr A and RNY and couldn't be happier.

Usual pre surgery stuff, and a cardiac stress test per my Primary doc just because. Pre surgery had no special instructions, I went liquids on my own two days before surgery. Surgery was Monday,8-10-09, nothing to eat or drink Monday, Tuesday went for leak check, all was ok so got liquids Tuesday. Wednesday morning got pureed, Drain removed and went home Wednesday evening on pureed. I had no desire to eat (did my shakes and vit****ill the wife started cooking eggs for my girls, so I poached an egg, and ate half of it.

I am back to all foods, Dr A told me to slow down on the weight loss, but I just don't have any desire to eat, I do 88+ grams of protein through shakes, I do try to eat small meals just to keep Dr A happy. I do every now and then "miss" eating, but I know it is in my head, and convince myself it is not needed, and because I have made a huge choice, I will not sabotage my decision. My sister in law had WLS many years ago, and you would never know it, and when her brother brought it up prior to my surgery, it was obviously a sore subject.

I would guess by you changing your mind and type of surgery you will do fine. Dr A is a fine Dr, and a great person.

Tom
