I went and had a screen for colon cancer today, no polyps or cancer seen.  However, the physician said I had 3 pockets which was dx as Diverticulosis ( caused by constipation).  I am current in my 3rd month of the Kaiser GB program.  Will this dx affect my chances for RNY.  I read all of your responses each day.  I really don't know how I would get through this without the support, and the education that I am gaining from all of you( thank you).  How is constipation treated post RNY, what medication are safe.

Unfortunately, I don't have any answers for you, but I remember hearing that Crohn's disease would prevent the surgery, not sure about other GI issues.

I actually had Irritable Bowel Syndrome (with diarrhea) pre-op, and it was like DVR waved a magic wand and with the surgery, it was gone.

If you have a surgeon you're interested in, your best bet is to call and ask.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Hugs,

Tia

Thanks, I have not seen a surgeon yet.  I will not get the referral until I complete the Kaiser 6 month program.  I hoping is will not make a difference since I am not symptomatic.

I am currently 5 weeks out I had IBS before surgery and the dr told me that would not be a problem.

I've personally found that my gas issues are GONE.  very odd but it's true.

for constipation I am doing chewable fiber (I use the sugar free fiber choice pills) and I make sure to drink at least 70 oz of fluids a day and take 2-6 fiber pills per day every day.  I'm having BMs about every other day and the doctor tells me that's fine.

Hi there,

Pre-op I had to have a sigmoidoscopy and they ended up finding 3 internal hemmorhoids.  I was put on a higher fiber diet.  Post-op I had issues with constipation for the first several months and was using stool softeners at first and then Miralax.  Now I find that as long as I have some fruit, such as apples, apple sauce, watermelon, berries, etc...not bananas), at least once per day, I'm fine.

I have read of many post-ops remaining on stool softeners and miralax as a way of maintaining regularity.

Hope that helps,
Heather

I also agree that if you have a surgeon you may want to call them and ask!

Best of luck~
