Got my surgery date...Now I have questions......

I'm having my Lapband surgery Nov 9th, just in time for when my husband gets back from Iraq. I thought I had to go through this alone, but he'll be back Oct 26th after spending a year in Iraq away from his 2 year old son and me. Yippie!!!! I'm happy and scared about the surgery, but have some questions.

1. Does getting "Fills" hurt?
2. Do you feel your "port"? And when I get down to my goal will I see it underneath my skin?
3. Any suggestions on great tasting chewable vitamins? Is getting the "Bariatric Advantage" brand better than any other brand?
4. Any liquid vitamins that taste good?
5. Calcium Citrate, any suggested brands better than others?
6. How long did it take you to recover? I hear back sleeping only and I'm a stomac sleeper so I'm going to be miserable.
7. How long do you have to sleep on your back?

Okay, I know that was a lot of questions, but you guys I know are the best ones who can help me with my questions :) Thanks a lot for any input on or ensight :)

1. Does getting "Fills" hurt?
I won't be able to answer this for sure until next week as that is when my first fill is BUT I hear it's just a pinch.

2. Do you feel your "port"? And when I get down to my goal will I see it underneath my skin?
I can feel my own port and it is wear the largest of the incisions is.  Some Dr.'s will replace your current port with a low profile port IF weight loss causes it to be visible.

3. Any suggestions on great tasting chewable vitamins? Is getting the "Bariatric Advantage" brand better than any other brand?
I just take a normal store brand gummy called Gummy Vites - for adults - got them at Target

4. Any liquid vitamins that taste good?
I haven't tried these

5. Calcium Citrate, any suggested brands better than others?
I don't take this either.  I do sometimes take Calcium chews that are just like vitamins - I take the kids kind called Little Critters and also get them at Target. I do get quite alot of calcium from eating cheese and I do still use milk.

6. How long did it take you to recover? I hear back sleeping only and I'm a stomac sleeper so I'm going to be miserable.
My recovery was a bit rough.  My surgery took twice as long as usual so I was quite sore.  Everyone is different.  I also went inpatient for one night and would have been in BAD shape had I done my outpatient. I am so glad I stayed.

7. How long do you have to sleep on your back? I had to sleep on my back 100% for about 2 weeks and then slow ease to my side with pillows propped up.   I used a king size pillow and tucked it under my side and used that to cushion my stomach to transition.  I wasn't able to sleeo on my stomach until I was in my 3rd week post op.

Please fee free to read my blogs.  I have posted rather extensively in the last month since my surgery.  Or feel free to PM me.  I am not a veteran by any means, but just one small step ahead of you so lots of the past month is vivid for me.

Good luck with everytihng. I didn't ahve the lapband so cannot answer a lot of your questions. The multivitamins, I started an excel sheet to track my spending on them and by 2 years out, now I just buy the cheapest ones. Puritan's Pride is a good site, they offer a lot of buy 2 get 3; buy 1 get 2 deals throughut the year and shipping's free. Also, if you join ebates.com and go to puritanspride through them, you earn cash back. If you're interested, let me know and i'll dig up links to both :)

Congrats on getting your date!!!  November 9 is just around the corner!

When Sugarfree Candy gets back from Vegas, I'll ask her to try to answer your band questions.  I consider her one of the best band authorities - she's done a great job with hers.

As far as vitamins, I personally think you won't find ANY great tasting ones!!!  Especially the liquid - ICK!!!  However, I take the Bariatric Advantage and they're doable - and they have a special lap-band formula, too.

Again, congrats on getting your date!

Hugs,

Can't answer any of the band questions sorry...

We have not found any liquid vitimans that my hubby likes

we use the bariatric advantage vitimans and the chewy calcium chews

Congrats on your date and your excitement. I can't answer any questions since I have not had surgery. I do wish you well and I am sure that Candy will help you as I am aware she has done great with her band. I am glad you are asking questions I am sure that will help your stress level. Good luck.

Lap Band on 05/27/08 with
Hi There,

Congrats on your upcoming life change!
1) My fills do not hurt.  My surgeon gives me a numbing shot first.  It's just a small *****  When he fills my port I can feel the needle inside, but no pain.  It's a bit weird is all :-)
2) I can feel my port inside me, but it is not visable.  Does not hurt at all.
3&4) I don't take liquid or chewable vitamins.  I use Centrum and they go down fine.
5) I don't take any extra vitamins.
6) I spent 1 night in the hospital and was walking around the next day.  A little sore for about a week but was back to daily activities in 3 days.   I'm also a stomach sleeper.  I was uncomfortable sleeping for about 4 nights but slept on my side hugging a pillow.  Helped a lot.

Good luck!  You'll be fine!  You'll see... it's not that big of a deal once it's done.

Congrats on getting a date AND hubby coming home!
Lots of excitement in a short time!  And the good news is you have a few days to spend together as a family before surgery.

I can't answer any band questions as I had RNY... For vitamins I take Bariatric Fusion but am about to transition into "regular" vitamins in the next week as soon as I talk to my surgeon and get iron worked out as well as exactly how much calcuim I should be taking...
