Some time ago, I mentioned I was going to make Kefir. Well I have been making and drinking it for over a week, now!  You need to google kefir, to see the benifits!  I use skim milk to make it. After it's made, I store it in a glass container,in the frig.  I make a fantastic 200 calorie shake:
1 cup kefir
1 scoop vanilla protein powder
1/4 cup frozen blueberries
Put in blender and be ready for a FANTASTIC experience!

Let me know if any of you want to start making it themselves.

Hi Ginger -

I've seen Kefir in a variety of flavors at Wegman's.  Is it easier/cheaper to make your own?  Sometimes, I'm willing to pay for convenience.

Thanks,

Tia

I bought it at the store, first, to see if I liked it. It was made with 2% milk, so I'd rather use skim. Cost $3.99, for a small bottle.  Bought some live grain (1 Tbsp.) on ebay, along with plastic strainers, as you can't use metal.  Each time you make it, the grains grow, giving you more. Go to www.mainichioishiidesu/stepbystepguide/milkkefirgrains This is the person I got mine from and she is very helpful.  If you're coming to the ocean, anytime soon, let me know, I can give you some.

Thanks!!!  I think, when I go to Wegman's this weekend, I'll buy a bottle first, see how I like it.  I'll let you know!

Not sure when I might be back down, trying to finagle a trip before Christmas, though!

Thanks again!

Thanks for the info Ginger.  I remember you mentioning making it, I'll have to keep that in mind.  I'd had it many years ago and then have gotten some at certain stores (although none of the one's near me actually carry it).  I like it and think that it tastes like yogurt, just with a thinner consistency.

I just store the kefir, in the frig. pour out what I want and add the other things to it, each time, frinking it right away.  Just had 1 with chocolate protein powder & 1/2 banana.  Nice, but I like the blueberry/vanilla more.

How long do you leave it sitting in the fridge? Because I have always heard that you have to drink your protein shake soon after making it.

I will have to check out the kefir out it sounds interesting.

Thanks for sharing!

I think she's just storing the kefir base in the fridge, Cira, and then using it as needed.
