Dreaded Hair Loss & Perms?????

I know its kind of inevitable....hair loss after WLS. I have finally hit that mark. Now, mind you about a year ago I cut off around 18 inches of hair, so it is still short. I have been holding off on getting it cut again because I want my long locks back! But my hair is at that horrible stage where I can not do anything with it. Now to top it off, I am losing hair! I was thinking about getting a cute, bouncy perm so as my hair will have some sort of style to it, but with it already falling out I am scared!
Will getting  a perm harm my hair more now? I cant afford to lose anymore! Any ideas or suggestions?????

HOJO -

The hair loss WILL stop - mine started at month 3 post op and continued until about month 7.  And I had thin hair anyway, so it was really noticeable.  The best thing to try to do is NOT stress - stress makes it worse.

A lot of people take Biotin or use Nioxin, but I didn't have any luck with the Biotin, and used the Pantene Restoratives line - they have a hair strengthening serum that seemed to work.  Unfortunately, you'll just have to ride it out.

As far as a perm, I know some people who get one to give the illusion of fullness, but since your hair is already somewhat "damaged," I don't know that I'd chance further breakage/damage with a perm - because you know they can be really harsh and drying anyway.

Hang in there,

Like Tia said the hair loss will stop. Mine stopped around 9 months out. The *only* thing that seemed to help me wa****ting a protein goal of around 100 + grams a day. I accomplished this by drinking two shakes every day.

My hair is growing back now just fine. I did notice my hair was very dry and coarse for a while so I switched to a shampoo that added moisture and shine and that helped for a while also.

Heather,

I started losing my hair fairly late in the game...after 6 mos and it is just now slowing down at a year out (on Wednesday).  What did I change?  Getting more protein in (100+g), making sure I get all of my calcium supplements, taking Biotin (which may or may not be helping), and using Regenetresse shampoo/products.  I did get a perm about 6 weeks ago, because my hair got to a point where I could do nothing with it, and I don't think it's done it any further damage.  I'm sure it helps that I'm not blow-drying it straight every day and that I let the sides and back air dry.

That being said, every person is different and their bodies (and hair) are going to react differently.

Just my experience,
Heather

I went the perm route to try and make my hair look fuller. My hair dresser warned me that it might not take due to the surgery, but I had no problems with it. I also have thin hair so I was desperate for some type of help! My hair has been growing back and filling in nicely the past couple of months.  My thoughts on whether or not you should do this is to talk to your hair dresser since she knows your hair and can offer advice on the pros and cons of getting the perm in regards to the condition of your hair.

another thing that I tried and liked was to get a hair cleanser and conditioner at Sally's Beauty supply. It is a non-sudsing way to clean and mositurize the hair and I am very fond of it.  If you look for it, it's in a dark green pump bottle.

Hope this helps.

There is this stuff called "Wild Growth" that's sold at Sally's Beauty Supply that might help you a great deal. They usually have it behind the counter and it only costs 7.99 a bottle (white bottle with green writing on it) and I know some cancer patients use it to stimulate hair growth and it's applied to the scalp. It makes your hair fuller and longer very quickly. It's an oil based product that's applied to the scalp, so you might have oily hair....hey but it'll be full and long :)
