Counting Carbs? Magic Number?

I was curious if anyone out there tries to stick to a carb regime and if so how many grams do you consume per day?

Pre surgery I was only allowed up to 30 grams per day and after surgery there are no restrictions but we all know sugar and the stuff that has carbs in it can keep us from losing or will contribute to our gain.

If anyone out there is willing to give me a carb lesson I'm all ears.  I still get so confused between good carbs and bad carbs.  When I think of bad carbs I think of sugar, bread and pasta but good carbs while I think of fruit and whole grain I still get concerned about the daily intake.

Looking for some guidance here.  Pureed food is coming and they say you can puree almost ANYTHING but i'd like to avoid that.  That field is a bit to big for me to me playing especially now!

Trying to make the best choices in stage 2 for the next two weeks!

Thanks
Nikki

I had the same dilemma, and my nutritionist told me that I'm a Type A Personality - so detail oriented.  I wasn't sure if she was complimenting or what.

I basically gave up on trying to figure out which is which - and rarely have fruits, grains or bread.  If I do, it's probably once or twice a month.  I figured as long as I stay away from as much carbs as possible, I'll do fine.

No one ever was really able to tell me, as a bander, how many carbs to limit.  So, I'm practicing better safe than sorry in this case.  Hopefully someone else can shed the light and then we'll have an epiphany.  SMILES

I don't know too much about Carb Counting. I just know to avoid the "bad carbs" as much as possible. I don't know what range you should limit yourself to. I'd be interested in knowing that too.

I already know I'm going to have a problem in the mushy stage. I'm really funny about the texture of my food. I can't imagine having to puree everything... makes me gag a little bit thinking about it lol.  The only thing I can think of to make is chili.. but even pureed meat seems yucky.

Pureed meat to me seems yucky too so I've decided to go with things like beans also to get more fiber because lord knows I need it.

Chili is on my list too as well as pureed Turkey BBQ my mom got me some from the Amish market in PA and I cannot WAIT to eat it :)

Oh and Im also planning on doing a noodless and meatleass lasagna by just making a ricotta cheese mixture with herbs and egg whites and fat free mozzarella and grated parm and topping with some marinara.

If I think of any more ideas besides just puree-ing meat I will let you know.

mmm the Turkey BBQ sounds good.. I could deal with that!

Tuna salad and egg salad might not be bad choices for pureed.

There's always baby food lol.

Lisa, just remember to watch that salad dressing or mayo if you're planning on tuna or egg salad.

Don't dismiss the baby food.  A lot of us have done it (including me).  I particularly liked the pureed veggies.  Some people have used the Gerber Graduates in their progression too.

Not going to be helpful. I have never counted carbs. I count protein gms to make sure I am not deficient and I count calories to make sure I don't go over.

Nikki, the basic bandster rule is protein first, veggies (good carbs) second and a bit of starch only if you have the room.  My nut doesn't believe in counting carbs.  The only thing she wants counted is protein grams and ounces of fluids.  That being said, I do count my fat grams and try to stay around 20 per day of healthy fats, never any trans fat.  You need some healthy fats for neuromuscular, cognitive, digestive and skin health.  As you progress per your doctor/nut's instructions, don't forget to try to get in some good carbs after your proteins:  veggies, fresh fruits without skins (not juice-empty calories), whole grains.  (Just know that you may need to avoid stringy things like celery, asparagus, broccoli stems, and thick skin veggies and fruits, like the skin of a baked sweet potato, apple skins, citrus membrane.) You'll do well to get a bit of the good veggies and fruits in for anti-oxidant properties, vitamins, and soluble and insoluble fibers.  The bad carbs are white carbs: white bread, non-whole grain pastas and rices, white potatoes, and, of course, any processed cakes, cookies, crackers, chips, etc.

By the way, if you PM'd me with your e-mail address to send you the scanned recipes, I didn't receive it.
