I cried a lot yesterday

I had my RYN at Johns Hopkins on Thursday and came home Saturday night.  The surgery went well.  They sent me home and told me to have 2-3 ounces of fluid per hour and to get in my 60-80 ounces of protein.  How the heck am I supposed to do that?  Yesterday (my first day home) I had some of a protein shake (yuck), some Isopure (Grape Frost not bad), s/f jello and Crystal Light.  I'm not big on the clear broth and when I add the unflavored protein powder it changes it a bit.  I'm very frustrated because I don't know what to do.  I noticed that some people have creamed soups during the full liquid phase, I thought that these were to be used during the next phase (pureed).  So if anyone has any advice...please help me (look I'm crying again).  Thank you!

Lynne,
Each surgeon has a different guideline on what you can and can't have during each stage...  I do not know anything about Dr. S's plan...  Just go by whatever folder, binder, etc that they gave you  -  and remember, this is a stage.  Thankfully it is a short stage, and you get to advance to full liquids soon.  In a few months, this will be forgotten and you will be rejoicing on weight loss!

Crying is also normal, your hormones are running amok and giving you more and more to deal with (as if you need it!) Fat cells store hormones, it is an emotional roller coaster ride for weight loss, but it will all be worth it as you make your way to goal!

Good luck!!  Feel free to vent here as you go through the stages, many of us have been there, others are waiting to get there.  You are NOT alone in this journey!!

Lynne,

I second what Angie told you. It is hard to get all of your protein in during the beginning. Just do the best you can with that. You will build up to the proper amount of protein before you know it. The fluids is the most important. It is easy to dehydrate especially in the beginning. Don't forget the sugar free popcycles. If the Isopure tastes too strong (it is for a lot of people) dliute it.

Just take it one step at a time. You wil be fine. Hang in there!

Best Wishes!

Lynne;  you are going thru what we all do just after WLS:  I've heard some refer to it as
buyers remorse:  but take heart it will pass soon:  As Debbie said it will take some time to reach
the protein goal:  but make sure you keep drinking!

At the risk of repetition, it is VERY hard to egt the 60-80 gms of protein in just with food. I used a liquid protein supplement for the first few months, Liquacel, comes in grape and orange flavors. not the best tasting but just a tablespoon will give you 16 oz. I used to do 2 tblsp every morning and every night for the first few wees after surgery and then the 2 tblsp in the morning for almost a year and a half.

everyone is different, you just have to do the trial and error. I was able to go to  solid foods in a very short time. But, anytime I was trying somethign new, I would do one bite, or one spoonful and wiat 5-10 minutes to see how my pouch reacted.

congratulations and good luck!

It comes in orange too??? I thought it only came in grape and I abhor grape flavored things.  I wish I would have known.  But yes, Liquidcel was the ONLY way I was able to get my protein in during the first few months.

Where did you get the orange from?

I order it directly from the manufacturer. http://www.globalhp.com/LiquaCel.html

I just call and palce an order and I usually have the stuff at home in 3-4 days. I love their Procel powder too. I can't taste or smell it.

((( Lynne )))

I hope it helps, somewhat, to know that we've all been there, done that.  Everyone's given you great advice, but let me add something that helped me enormously.  Every time you drink your 2-3 oz. of fluid and get in some protein, write it down.  It really does help to see it in print.  Trust me, no doctor is going to expect you to show stellar results immediately.  It takes time, but it WILL happen.  When you go for your follow-up, Dr. S. will ask for your numbers, so it's good to have a journal that you can take with you.

Hang in there and let us know if we can help!

At this point Lynne... just do the best you can.  As stated already, your hormones are raging.  I wound up having to get on some "Don't kill anyone" pills.   Do the best you can, but don't be hard on yourself if you can't get in all that you need. Everything is very new and your body is in shock as to what just happened to it.  Everything will come together.  If you need anything, pm me and we can talk privately and I'll give you my #.

Congratulations to you on this awesome step you have taken and best wishes to you on your continued journey.
