would love some support from my wise Maryland friends...
Hi everyone,
It has been a while since I've posted on this board. I had a RNY on 7/27/09. My recovery has been a bit rough, and I'm wondering if there are others out there who might be able to relate to my experience and remind me that there IS a LIGHT at the end of this tunnel!!!
Had surgery 7/27/09 and stayed at hospital until 7/29/09. Everything was routine and fine; I could not WAIT to get out of the hospital. Stayed at my father's house outside of Philadelphia for 2 weeks to recuperate. Found I had a MAJOR aversion to the protein shakes almost immediately after surgery. I was barely getting in 20gm a day. Drank as much water as I could, but never kept track. Didn't feel great. Started getting fevers at night. Drain site remained agitated for weeks.Since I could NOT get shakes down anymore, dietician moved me to purreed/soft foods, and I started eating some tuna, eggs and tilapia. All were handled fine. Finally came back to MD on 8/12/09 and went to doc on 8/13/09. At that point, started dry heaving and fevers were high.
I was readmitted to the hospital on 8/13/09, and was so dehydrated they could NOT find a vein anywhere on me! Had to put in a central line. Pumped me full of saline and I started to feel human again. While at the hospital, had a CT scan done and doc saw that my spleen was the problem. Apparently a small part of it lost its blood supply after being "bumped" during surgery. Apparently, the spleen heals itself. I was discharged and sent home. My mom came home with me and helped me through 4 days of super intense fevers. I drank my fluids and even got 40gm of protein from shakes in.
2 days ago, could no longer keep the shakes down. They just came back up. So did the eggs I tried this morning. It seems my pouch only wants thin, water-like liquids. Doc says this is normal for some folks. He says not to worry and just go with it.
Basically, I need to know if anyone has experienced any of this, and how did you get through it?? Will I ever feel normal again? Do I just need patience?
This is all pretty scary. I felt so prepared, but I realize now I was prepared for an experience without complications! That is not always the way life works!
Any thoughts, advice, ideas are much appreciated. Thank you so much.
Lissa

Lissa,
I feel your pain and I wish you did'nt have to go through it. I had a hard time for 4-6 weeks post op. Jello, pudding, soups and back again. Pouch rejected almost everything I tried. Got very frustrated for a few weeks and was afraid to try anything new. Slowly I did and I found shrimp, and sardines friendly. Then the choices begain to open up. It will get better
Good luck

Hi Lissa,
I am sorry you are going through a rough patch. I must say that I can relate with your frustration. Most of us get the buyers remorse feeling. It takes about 6 weeks after surgery to start feeling human again.
You can read my profile from March of 2006 I also had complications from my spleen being nicked. I thought I was going to die. I was filling up with blood which was pushing my diaphragm up and I couldn't breath, and parts of my lungs collapsed. It was definitely a rough recovery. I also regretted having weight loss surgery and I used to cry all the time. I have major aversion to protein drinks any smells and anyone who stood near me I could not stand to smell. Everything tasted horrible and there wasn't much I could eat. You know what saved my life? Mashed potatoes with melted cheese and crab cream soup I lived on that for a good while.
I promise you sweetie it is going to get better it might just take you a little bit of time because of the complication. But take it one day at a time. You will be able to eat again and tolerate drinks and so forth. I was barely getting 40 oz of fluids a day and maybe 25 grams of protein. So just take your time and know that you are NOT a lone.
Remember that with each day it will get better. Remember to take monthly pictures and measurements of yourself so when you don't see the changes you can definitely see it on picture.
I am here for you if you need to talk just send me a message.
One day you are going to wake up and it is going to be so weird because you are going to be feeling so good you will think you are dreaming. lol
Best of luck on your journey.

Forgot to mention to take it really slow drinking your protein drinks. If you can buy Isopur protein drinks that has no milk in it maybe that will help or even protein bullets. Just sip sip sip ...... Never rush.... That should help with your pouch not getting upset. Good luck!

I am so sorry you are going through this. unfortunately, I can not help since i have never had any problems remotely like yours. my problem is i can eat everything LOL. i sure hope you start to feel better soon. i honestly dont know if your doc is right about it being normal though. you may want to be more aggressive about it. cuz u r not getting remotely enough protein in and that will lead to all sorts of problems later on. i hope you figure out how to resolve these issues so you can eat properly. but not being able to keep anything down is NOT normal in my opinion!
