Sylvie, I know Heather M. has a recipe she uses, but she's getting ready to leave for the beach so I don't know if she'll see it.

My Mom used to make her own until we found Hanover (the frozen veggie people) make a Maryland Crab Soup mix - it's veggies and seasoning.  All you do is add crab meat and water.
Now, Mom doesn't use anything else.   It's in the frozen case with the veggies.

We buy ours at Mars Supermarket - don't know if there's one in Elkridge.

I am sure I can find one someplace. I really wanted to do one from scratch at elast once lol Been on a cooking streak lately. With my mom taking voer my kitchen, I haven't had my kitchen to myself in months!

Sylvie, I don't have a written recipe that I use.  I'm one of those kind of cooks that just knows how much to throw in the pot as I'm cooking.  But, basically, I first try to use fresh steamed crabs that are leftover, I pick the meat and boil the shells to get the stock and Old Bay from the shell. If not, I buy a pound of crab meat and then continue.  Saute/sweat a whole chopped onion/4-6 stalks chopped celery/4-6 chopped carrots in a little bit of olive oil, when soft add 6 quarts of water and 8 Tbsp of Beef Base (like boullion, but it has to be refrigerated). I then add a can of drained green beans, drained corn (or fresh cut off the cob if I have it), stewed Italian tomatoes (with the juice), small can of tomato paste and then I chop up a small head of cabbage to add in.  If I have it on hand I'll also throw in some baby lima beans, but I never put in potatoes.  Season with Old Bay to your liking and more Beef Base if it needs it.  Simmer until the cabbage is cooked down.  Sometimes I'll actually start with some cut up beef chunks and a few strips of bacon for more flavor.  My recipe is made in a 12 quart stock pot just so I have lots of room.  It freezes very easily also!

Revised to VSG (6/11/09) weighing 253...

Sylvie:

Actually Heather's recipe sounds pretty good.  I usually just do a beef based veggie soup and add old bay.  I also add the crab at the end so it doesn't cook down so much.  I like lumpy crab meat.  You can also buy a bag of "claws" and throw them in at the last minue .  Just break them open and leave the tips on.  Makes a good presentation.

Lis -

You add old bag?  Don't the screams get unbearable?

Trust me, I make some doozies!!

The best one I ever caught, though, was someone writing a letter about MSP, ".....those of us in pubic service....."

LMAO!!!!

Heck no.  You know it takes more than that to offend me.  I had a few from job seekers when I worked in HR on resumes.

Hooked on phonics.
