Pre Op Liquids - Advice, Suggestions, Support

I approaching my liquid diet in 2 weeks and trying to mentally prepare for and also get my house ready by removing everything with calories, carbs, sugar and so on.

I did read someone else's pre op diet  ( who also had the band) and my suggested diet was NOTHING like hers.

I'm not even allowed to have soup, only broth. Only Hood brand no-carb milk which is not at my local store, and only adkins or eas shakes, water and crystal with UNJURY protein.

They say the diet is 500-900 calories and max of 30 carbs.  They expect me to lose at least 15lbs and prepare my liver for surgery.

I've yet to come across anyone who has had this strict of a pre-op diet.  Anyone care to enlighten me.  I'm starting on a friday so at least on Satruday and Sunday I can split nails and chew on my own arm if need be....

Sigh,
Nikki

Wow Nikki,

I had the RNY and didn't need to do a pre-op liquid diet.  So I can not shed any light on that.  I just wanted to wish you all the best in your journey to WLS.  Please know that we are all here to support you through the next couple of weeks.  I have heard it is quite difficult at first but then it gets a bit easier after a few days of the liquid diet.

I am sure someone will chime in for you soon.

Welcome to the MD forum!

Take care,

Cira

Hi Nikki!

Cira and I had the same surgeon, so again, no pre-op liquid diet here.

You'll find that even with the same type of surgery, each surgeon has different criteria.  It can be pretty frustrating to try to find answers sometimes, but hopefully, someone will be able to help you.

As far as the protein drinks, protein will help fill you up and help you stay full longer, so look for a low carb drink that has the most bang for the protein buck.  I personally use the EAS Advant Edge myself and really like them.

Hang in there!!

I did not have the pre-op liquid diet either. However, I wanted to let you know that the Hood Carb Control Milk, regular and chocolate are my staples and I use it all the time. Most of the Gint stores around me carry it. If yoou have a Giant near you, I suggest checking with them.

Wishing you all the best!

Debbie

NRC - my pre -op consisted of liquid regardless of the base of the product - hence why I'd have the cream soups.  What my food couldn't have was particles like mushrooms in a cream of mushroom soup.  I still lost weight, and no one hit me over the head for having cream soups.  I think that some doctors may shy away from the cream soups because they do have solids in them, but if you call and ask if it's strained, can you still have them.  The cheddar cheese soup didn't have particles in it, so if you want to use that as an example when inquiring - that would work.

If they told you  that you could have sugar free puddings, that's creamy based......just a thought.  I'd hate to see you get stuck with 4 weeks of totally clear liquids and broths.  It's no fun, so I wish you a lot of luck on getting the okay to get the creamy stuff going!  Keep us in touch!  And congratulations on getting your date!

Wow I am really surprised to see that NO ONE has had these preop diets.  I guess my Dr. is supper strict on the diet and they want you to LOSE LOSE LOSE!!!!  I definitely cannot just have any liquids it is only the clear stuff and the Hood Milk.  NO cream soups....ahhhh - actually they even said no vegetable broth because it has too many carbs.

I'm certain it's going to be a tough two weeks pre-op but trying to mentally get myself geared up and of course I should be losing weight even before I get the band with this kind of radical diet.

I'm sure the jumpstart will be worth it but there might be a lot of kicking and screaming along the way!

I will definitely be either glued to the computer or the TV or asleep that entire first weekend of the diet.  Hopefully by the time I go back to work I am used to it.

I had lost 20 pounds doing the preop diet I had for two weeks.  I wish you the best in your journey and hope you find fun stuff because I don't know about your doctor, I had two more weeks of liquid post op, for a grand total of 4 weeks of nothing but liquids.

I am the same 2 weeks pre op liquids and 2 weeks post op liquids but im hoping post ops are better then pre...then onto puree for 2 weeks then "easy chew".  Then back for a fill and the mini routine all over again!

I just have to mentally challenge myself.
