IVC Filter

Hi,
I was wondering what everyone has done who had an IVC filter placed for surgery....have you left it in or did you get it removed a few months after surgery? Have you had any problems with it?

Originally my surgeon said it should come out a few months after surgery, but now he's giving me a non-answer answer...he says "well, you could leave it in, or you could take it out....it's up to you...some people are glad they kept it in becuase they throw a clot down the road, but there is also risk of having problems from leaving it in"

Thanks!
Erin

Hi Erin,

I left mine in and I am 20 months post-op. So far I have not had any issues with it at all. I too debated about it and eventually ran out of time. I was told that after 3 months, you have to leave it. Every now and then, I wonder if it will become an issue. So far, not.

Erin:

I chose to leave mine in :  and am so glad I did!.  I developed a blood clot
around 18 months out and it saved me from having to stay in the hospital a
couple days.

Brian (my DH)  is having one placed on August 11th.   While our internist would like it removed the Vascular surgeon suggests he leave it in so that when he has plastics done in a few years he won't need another one.

we're going to leave it in.

Hi Erin -

I had my implanted about a month prior to surgery, and it's still there.  The vascular surgeon who did it said mine was the permanent kind.  No matter, because I don't know it's there - until I read posts like yours.

Good luck,

Tia
