Lori, my heart goes out to you, but it's these kind of things, that, anger me the most. I can truly understand if the patient waiting for their insurance co to approve the surgery gets denied because the surgery was listed as cosmetic. I understand it, but I don't like it. Most of the people considering WLS, have been told by their Dr's that it is life threatening. Forget all the co-morbidity's, that could cause death at any moment, just carrying all that extra weight is lethal. A person that is addicted to drugs and or alcohol can get their insurance co.'s to send them To rehab 1, 2, 3x, and still there are many that are unsuccessful, but when applying for Bariatric surgery, that is considered Life Saving WLS is not only denied, but excluded. This is just one more case of Obese Discrimination. It is time for things to change. People don't realize how many Bariatric patients die every year from one or more co-morbidity's, or complications due to obesity. This is a real physical and psychological problem, that needs to be covered by ALL Insurance Co's. To all of us who have had WLS we are the fortunate ones, but something has to be implemented for the others. Lori, DON'T take no for a answer! Fight the fight! Just like Tia said find a Dr, therapist, dietitian, anyone who will vouch for you and write a amazing letter. I wish you all the best, if you know some one in the same boat, get together, there is always strength in numbers! All my best, Leslie:)
