Hello,

I have been thinking about the surgery for 2-3 years now and am very hesitant.  I think the major thing that is holding me back is taking all the medicine everyday.  I have a very, very hard time taking pills and I am afraid I will do myself more harm than good if I end up getting the surgery and can not take the pills down. I have been researching liquid or shot's as alternatives but I just do not know too much about everything that is needed as of yet.

I went to a seminar with Dr. Sing in Balto and next month will mark the end of my six month diet. I  lost 30 pounds, they tried to put me on Phederline (sp?) and it made my arm go numb so I stopped taking it after two days.

I have terrible back issues (most likely due to my weight) and the Dr's keep giving me steroids which in return cause me to gain more weight, and be in more pain.  It's a vicious cycle.

My next step in August is to go to the Gast Dr, Nut and Psyc for the appointments. The bad thing is my insurance that covers this surgery runs out in August or September, so I am cutting it very close!

Hi Melissa,

There are many types of ways to take your vitamins that do not require you to swallow large pills. Bariatric Advantage sells liquids and chewables for most of what we need. I would not let that stop you from getting the surgery. It sounds to me like you need to lose the weight and NOW. so push to be approved before your insurance runs out! Good luck.

Welcome Melissa! And Congratulations on your journey to find the right solution for your best life. I have always had a strong gag reflext and hated taking pills, especially large ones. Pre-op, I used to take a basketful of meds every day. I am fortunate that after WLS, they are all gone. I do take my vitamins every day.  I use chewables and sublinguals. The only thing I have to swallow these days is a Tylelnol once in a while.

Best wishes to you!

Welcome to the Maryland Forum Melissa!

I want to wish you all the best. Only you can make the right decision for yourslef.  Like Nicole said there are many ways to take your vitamins if that is the only thing holding you back just know there are diffent choices.

When I first had surgery I took liquid and chewables. i now take the pills without a problem. I know that it is the best for me so I can stay healthy so I am commited to doing just that.

This is a life altering surgery.  A change and a commitment that is forever.  I wish you all the best with your journey,

Take care and keep us posted

I am sorry your suffering back pain honey. You will when you lose too as well as tail bone pain but its worth it I promise. I pray you can get it all in before your insurance runs out. Did you make your Doc aware of the deadline? Maybe they will speed it up just for that purpose. Best of luck to you honey and Welcome to the Maryland Board!

Melissa welcome to the board. There are many great people here and many who will be more than glad to help you. I do hope you tell your Docs about your insurance. Maybe they can get you in. Good luck on your decision and I have learned from the best here that the decision must be yours and no one elses. You must do it when you are ready not when you feel pushed. Take care and know we are here for you.

Thanks for the warm welcomes ladies, I appreciate it.

I very much would like to look into the chewables and liquid medicine

I am going to call the Dr tomorrow and see how soon I can set up a appointment to go into see him and find a Nut & Psyc as well.  I have yet to stress the urgency since my insurance is running out, but I will tomorrow.

I forgot to mention I am 28 and live in Columbia.

Thanks again!

Like everyone said, chewables and/or liquids are a necessity post op for your vitamins and supplements, but small pills do go down fine.  In my opinion, being a healthy weight taking vitamins and supplements are better than being obese and ending up taking (or already taking) meds for blood pressure, diabetes, etc.  Good luck and welcome to the board!!!

Revised to VSG (6/11/09) weighing 253...
