IT'S GRAY, SO LET'S PLAY...!!!
Although we did go to Disney when I was 17, Ocean City, MD and Wildwood, NJ were always our family vacation spots. We used to stay in hotels, until we hit the big time and could "afford" a condo!! I actually miss the days of staying in a hotel - less work for me! But we never reserved ahead of time, simply took our chances. I remember sitting in the car as we drove from place to place, with Dad going into the office to check on prices. You could sometimes tell by his face whether we were staying there or not! I think my favorite hotel in OC from my childhood was the Ocean Mecca. It's still there (I can't quite remember what street), but the pool was right on the boardwalk, which was pretty neat!
Dad HATED for us to want to play the games on the boardwalk, he always said they were rigged. But Mom let us play when Dad wasn't around!!! LOL!! We didn't ride the rides much, either. In retrospect, we spent so much time at the pool because Mom and Dad had very little extra money. It always seemed like our car would die, too, while we were on vacation. Ole Bessie must've known we didn't have much $!!!! I remember being rained in on more than one vacation - it always seemed to let up the day we were scheduled to go home, though. I don't know how Mom didn't go nuts with two kids in a hotel room all week! We played LOTS of games, though.
I have REALLY fond memories of our beach summers, and of course, we try to do the same for KB. It's a safe bet that they get to do more than we EVER did, though! lol
So tell me about YOUR summertime memories!
Tia
I do remember going to Atlantic City and being out on the Steel Pier. I think I saw the Beach Boys there. I'm sure we only stayed over night one night though. You didn't have to have reservations for at least 2 nights back then. You just stopped in and got a room. God...things were so much simpler then. I miss the 60's. We use to go to a swimming pool called Meadowview a lot. I think it may have been up toward Gettysburg. We also use to go to a park called Braddock Heights. It had a gigantic sliding board that you slid down on burlap.
Those were the days my friend..........until my father started drinking very heavily. It wasn't so good after that. Sorry....didn't mean to get so negative. It is what it is....right?
All in all, I had a good childhood and good memories with my family.
Yep, times were much simpler then, Gail. My Dad worked a LOT of shift work, so it was always up to Mom to entertain us. How she did that without driving a vehicle amazes me!
I'm sorry about your Dad, Gail - I was married to an alcoholic and I know the hell a loved one goes through. I hope you take heart in the fact that despite that, you've turned out to be a phenomenal woman!!
Hugs,
Tia
I am the youngest of 5 kids so vacation was a big deal to us. We lived in FL but my mom grew up in Wisconsin so she only got to see her family on vacations. Each and every year Dad would take 2 weeks off of work and we'd drive to WI - took 2 1/2 days. When ALL the kids went I remember eating out of a cooler, and taking a nap in the back of the wagon with Mom. When it got to be just ME and the folks going, they had more money so we'd eat in restaurants. Then we'd get to WI and Grandma would have 'sweets' tucked into hiding spots (that *I* knew about) and she'd have a dinner of ham and fresh corn on the cob. YUM. We'd eat that ham each and every damn night tho until it was gone. She was born in 1903 so she was excellent at preserving her resources. :)
I'd get to hang out with my cousins, and aunts and uncles, and visit the dairy farms, go to the cheese factories and to WI Dells - which has tons of things for kids. River boat tours, the "duck" rides, Indian festivals, etc. I always hated to leave. I always got to got pick raspberries with grandma too from her garden out back. Grandma passed about 8 years ago and my cousin now owns her OLD house - with the original claw foot tub upstairs. OMG I just remembered this 'cubby' hole in the wall as you went upstairs. I was always so afraid that there were monsters inside, I would NEVER open it. After grandma passed we found it contained some OLD magazines. lol
The rest of my summer included an arts and rec program at the school****heran horse camp a couple summers, and much time just running the hood with my friends. We'd stay out side ALL day unless it was raining. Always in someones pool it seemed. We'd lay down and watch the clouds, look for little lizards and tadpoles.
*sigh* those were the good old days.
Thanks for a stroll down memory lane Tia!
edited for spelling!
Oh, Ang, you took me back when you talked about the rec summer camp! Remember gimp? It was colored vinyl coated wire that you could braid, make into bracelets, etc. I STILL get a rush when I see gimp in AC Moore!!! LOL!!
And running around in the evening, catching fireflies - funny how mosquitoes never bothered me then! Now, I'm content to sit on the porch and let Happy catch fireflies!!! LOL!!!!
And me and my girlfriends couldn't wait until the latest 45 came out. We'd sit around the turntable listening to the song over, and over. Jessie's Girl stands out the most, along with Little Jeannie by Elton John.
