Regarding the damage - I don't think there will be any major damage.  The band just gets snapped on like it's a ring - and I do believe he takes a piece of the tissue to pull over on the band so that the band is anchored in place.  He'll probably go through the same cuts he used when he first put it in.  If he does take it out because you still are not feeling well, the substantial thing that you're going to notice is that you don't have that same pain anymore.  It's probably going to be like having a bad gall bladder taken out - the pain is there from the surgery - but the relief is also there to balance out.
