Open vs. Lap

Who here has had there RNY open vs. lap? I have surgery scheduled for 6/26 & it is going to be done open due to the fact that I have had a history of adhesions, cysts, and scar tissue. I have had about 5 lap surgeries done via my belly button, and know the recovery with those. I had a hysterectomy which wass done open, hip to hip, a few years back also.
I guess my question is, what should I be expecting with open RNY? Re-coop time, size of incision, exercise, pain levels,  ya know all the normals.......including when can I have sex......sorry I had to ask!
Yes, my doctor answered most of these......but I want answers from actually people who have had it done! Make sense?

Hojo!

I don't know many surgeons who do open vs. lap anymore, unless, like in your case, it's a necessity.  I do know that Dr. Vanguri does his open, or most of them, anyway.

Mine was lap and was pretty easy.  I had open GB surgery in 1990 and it was just this side of hell, I had a 12" incision, had to hold a pillow to cough, sneeze or laugh, etc.

I don't mean to scare you - hopefully, it won't be bad for you!!

Tia......
Yeah, I see most are lap now......too bad for me! The hysterectomy was excruiating! I had to use a pillow too for most activities. the incision was from hip to hip, under my fat roll!
I was just hoping there was someone here that could give me some insight .......trying to ease the curiousity!

if you do as the doc says you will be ok i slept in reclyner it was easier for me but do keep pillow handy i never went anywhere with out them and get wipies for potty, its kind of hard to keep clean with staples but wippies help with that, keep a eye out for redness or heat coming from insision, it hurts im not going to lie but i have had worse operations like hysterectomy hurt worse, knee surgery was total pain not really in a lot of pain just discomfort of staples and insision healing

Yikes that sounds scary! I had my C-section from hip to hip under my fat roll and it hurt like a momma for weeks. Not good when you have a 10.5 pound infant to lug around, thank God for family medical leave is all I can say. I wish I had an answer for you but I would think lap would be the way to go if you could.

Mellie......
I never had a C-Section, but I can only imagine it is very similiar to a hysterectomy. I wanted my surgery done lap but due to medical history, I have to have it open. The doctor said that he could start it lap, but it would end up being open anyway. So I respect his dicision to cut me open.
How are you & your hubby making out? Feeling better? I wish you a speedy recovery!

Well I think you will do fine, just may need a bit more recovery though. Take enough time and make sure you have lots of help.

We are doing good. Marty is down 20 pounds already and is off his BP meds. Hes doing excellent.

Im feeling much better today. Forcing the fluids but doing good. Thanks for asking.

My Mom had RNY Open, I had mine done Lap.... Here's what I've noticed, difference wise:

* She needed help to get up for longer than I did.  My Dad installed bars in the bathroom to help her get up and down from the potty.  But, not sure/can't remember if she needed them, or if he was just going overboard.  I remember her being too sore to do much for about a week/week and a half.  I was out walking at a week.

* She stayed in the hospital longer than I had to, but, again, that could just be due to hers being done in 01, where as mine was 09.

* She developed a hernia where her incision was.  I believe that hernias there are common for those that had Open when she did - she knew about it as a complication, and was told that it would just be repaired when she gets her tummy tuck.  She still has the hernia.  But, still, this could also be that this is due to her surgery being performed 8 yrs ago.

* Her incision is about 3 inches (I think) and is vertical, right in the center of her tummy.

* Other experiences, I think, were similar to mine.  While her recovery time was more along the lines of mine when I had a C-section, once she felt better, she was up and around.  When she looks back (as when I look back) the hardest part was the "learning curve" about how to eat, what agrees with her and what doesn't, etc....

Mom is a BIG fan of RNY - she is a nurse and tells people how it changed her life.  So much so, that she convinced both me and my sister to do it.

Hope this helps
