Ok real silly question for everyone
Hi Tom!! Didn't get a chance to welcome you to the Maryland Board, so................WELCOME!!!
I think/hope you'll enjoy it here. As you can see, there aren't a lot of men on here, but everyone that's here is very helpful and supportive.
A lot of us, due to time constraints, children, etc., don't attend ANY support groups, bur rather, come HERE for our support. However, once you're a new post-op, it's important, at least for the first month or two, IMHO, to attend your surgeon's support group. That way, you'll get the benefit of his/her staff and other patients of the same surgeon.
Sometimes on here, it can get confusing, especially for newbies, because every surgeon has different guidelines and of course, each surgery type also has different guidelines. So until you get comfortable with your parameters/guidelines, you probably SHOULD attend your surgeon's meetings. That doesn't mean you can't combine the support you receive here with the physical meetings, but initially, that should be your main focus.
Hope this helps!! Thanks for joining!
Tia

Oh I planned on attending the follow up support groups, just kind of curious what folks did that traveled for surgery.
Tom
Hey Tom welcome to the journey and the MD board.
This is your journey not the doctors, nurses or anyone elses. You make the decisions. Go wherever you want to go. Support can come from many sources. I'am leaving my Doc at the 6 mo out time. To far to travel. My PCP is 5 blks from my home.
One thing I have learned in my short period out is the WLS procedure I had was just a 48 hr event. The rest of my life has to be devoted to a lifestyle change. My Food choices will be daily and life long. If I fail in I will get super fat again.
good luck

Hi Tom,
Post-op I haven't attended a support group but would have if it had been required of me. However, I follow the guidelines that the surgeon's staff provided me pre-op and in my follow-up appointments with the nutritionist and surgeon. I come here for the majority of my support and we tend to get together at least once per month. I've also found a wealth of information on some of the other boards on this website (your surgical board as well as the Main Board).
Hope that helps,
Heather

hi tom! I'm over in hagerstown and I had my surgery in baltimore. I have not been to any of my surgeon's support group meeting but I have attended a few of the carroll county support group meetings and hopefully Cira will be able to get hers up and running in Charles town, WV since I'm moving to the eastern panhandle soon. i know at all my surgeon's appointments he always asks me if i'm going to support groups. i think it's important to go to groups and share your stories as much as here. As long as you're getting the support you need, that is my surgeon's only concern.

Hey Tom! Welcome!
I have not been to any of my doc's support meetings. I am finding all the support I feel I need right here. Everyone on here has been wonderful and it's been a pleasure to meet them in person. I say do what you think is right for you. When I have a question, I post it on here and I get all kinds of answers. This site really has been very helpful.
Welcome again!!!

Welcome again!!!
My surgeon requires that those in his program attend at least one support group prior to surgery. They record who attends and add that as part of your file. For me, once I attended my first one, I could not get enough of them pre-op. I always picked up something new that helped me get more prepared and mentally ready for the surgery. I still love support groups, although I do not go as often as I like. I do think having a network of support is extremely important to keep your focus on the program. You can achieve this ongoing via any type of support group and online here. Besides the freindships I have developed here, there is an unlimited amount of ready support.

Hey Tom - I went to the Dr. support group a couple times after surgery but since then monthly I attend one or two other support groups in my local area. Dr. A doesn't care which support group you go to as long as you participate in one. He likes you to continue to participate in some kind of group.
Hope this helps!
