Booze

I have a question for folks.  Next month I will be celebrating my bday by going out dancing w/some friends.  Now, in my former life (pre-op) I would usually consume large amounts of booze so I could dance the night away.  In this life,  I don't drink or at least I haven't since surgery.  Now, I do feel a lot better about myself, so I could probably still dance and not feel like everyone is watching the fat girl dance.  That being said, I'm tempted to have one drink to celebrate.  At that point, I'll be about 4 1/2 mos out.  Do you all think that would be ok?  Is it too soon to drink?  And what in the world could I drink?  I love beer, but I don't think I could handle the bubbles.  Everything else is mixed w/a sugary juice or soda.

Thanks for the feedback!!

I did not drin****il I was several months out.  I don't remember how long exactly, but I know it was a while.  I still have to watch it, and I'm almost 6 years out.  I would suggest staying away from beer -- probably NOT a good idea because of the bubbles (like you said).  Anything else is probably going to be high in sugar, but it won't kill you to have a little for your b-day.  Margarita?  ****tail (w/o carbonation)?  Either should probably be ok.  I'd stick to the frozen drinks, though.

Don't drink too much.  You will likely "feel it" instantly.  I'm 24 and my friends call me "the lightweight" because I definitely cannot "hang" (of course -- my stomach is the size of my fist!!).  But, I have found that hangovers are pretty much nonexistent because your metabolism is so high!!

Good luck!!

Kelly -

What are Dr. Moen's guidelines involving alcohol?  Personally, I didn't have my first drink post-op until I was about 10 months out; for others, their surgeons say at least 1 year.

Alcohol also contains lots of empty calories, and being out with your friends is NOT the time to experiment to see what you can handle.  You don't want to spend the night in the bathroom or worse, the ER!!!

Just my opinion!!!!

i'm nine months out and alcohol is a tricky thing.  i usually only have one glass of wine.  one glass sometimes has little effect... sometimes makes me feel like i've had three glasses... and sometimes i dump on it.  it's very unpredictable for me.  my advice is to try alcohol at home before you try it out in public.  you wouldn't want it to ruin your birthday celebration.

i just noticed that you are only four months out.  personally i think that's too soon, but i'm only offering that because you asked.  i would just ask your doctor for his opinion and follow his advice.

gotta agree with Tia on the point that your first night out with friends shouldn't be the first time to try something new, especially aclohol. I was 8 months out when I tried my first drink, but I was out with my family and we weren't at a club.

I could have 1 beer and feel nicely buzzed or I could have 3 drinks another day and not feel a thing.

Hi Kelly,

I don't know what the new NUT's guidelines are, but when I had my surgery, Sloane was still there.  The Bible (then) said no alcohol until a minimum of 6 months out.  No carbonation, ever.  She had something in there about an occasional glass of wine being okay after the 6-month period.  I think there is a notation in there that alcohol is generally 7 calories per gram.  That Bible is mostly geared to RNY patients (I am Lap Band), but I follow it nonetheless.  I believe the concern about carbonation has always been extreme discomfort and distending the pouch and esophagus.  I haven't had anything carbonated since my surgery (even faked drinking champagne at my stepdaughter's wedding).  I'm too much of a chicken!!!

I think everyone has some pretty good points.  My other concern is if I do drink and I tolerate it, I'm going to want to drink again the next time I go out.  It's like pandora's box.   Maybe I should keep the box closed for a little longer.

I was kinda hoping the majority of folks would say, no problem you can have one drink!!   I'm glad you all are here to answer my questions for me.

Thanks,
Kelly

Confession time...  ROFL (I am 7 weeks out today)

I tried a drink of wine on Sunday... Well an ounce.  DID NOT like the feeling.  ROFL, I was a light weight before surgery - one glass and I wasn't driving and giggled up a storm.

This one ounce sample at Fiore turned the thermostat up, and I had to walk outside I was sweating and roasting for about an hour.  I giggled for about 20 minutes before it wore off... I won't be trying that again for a good long time!
