Those darn banks
This is how banks get you. You have a “posted balance" vs. an “available balance."
Your posted balance is how much money you have in the bank that does not include things you charged with your debit card. Your available balance is what you have less those transactions. Some banks will take into account your available balance with ATM transactions, letting you overdraw your account (because it’s put a hold on check card transactions) just so they can charge you that fee. That is why everyone is hollering about the government needs to regulate banks better.
It is a little known fact, however, that most banks, if you call and ask them nicely, will refund an overdraft fee for you. I do it all the time. Banks have gotten better at tracking this though so now they usually only let you do one fee, once a year. Try it. Perhaps they will give it back to you.

I've tried mutiple ways to keep hubby from overdrawing our accounts and/or spending too much money. When I'd had enough of it happening from the main account, I opened a second account for his spending money. In the end that didn't work either and now, when he's working, he gets an "allowance" in cash and when it's gone...it's gone! Hate doing it, but you gotta do what you gotta do!!
I give Bruce money when I remember and leave some in his acount in case I don't have any. He does not give any thought to whether there are outstanding things to be paid with that money. He just knows he needs some ca**** does drive me crazy sometimes. I do try to be patient though as he has been a wonderful provider for the 35 years we have been married.
PS I only love Bank of America only for the fact that I can do check deposits without envelopes. Whoever thought of that idea was genius! No pens needed - just hit deposit, and feed the checks (and you can feed cash too)
