For months now I have called UHC to find out if I need a 6 month diet.  I have always been told no. Well, the doctor's office insisted that UHC requires it so I pushed back with my benefits department to get a clear answer, and in writing.  This is what I recevied:

Good Morning Angela,

I have confirmed with UHC that, "yes" pre-approval is required. You physician will need to provide as much information as possible based on the clinical guidelines for bariatric surgery. The requirements are as followed:

Failed medical therapy, including physical activity patterns, behavioral therapy and at least six months of frequent medical visits of at least once per month will be required.

Documentation of a structured diet program including physician or other health care provider notes and/or diet weight loss logs from a structured weight loss program. This requirement follows the clinical guidelines for Bariatric surgery.

The benefit for Morbid Obesity is as follows: The following services are covered: Surgical and non-surgical treatment of obesity when there is a diagnosis of morbid obesity. I hope this information helps. I apologize if you were given incorrect information previously. Please let me know if I may be of further assistance.

OMG  I inderstand why you are upset!!!

First of all check with your Dr and see if during the last two years you were in there
at least once a month for six months straight.

I know this is not what you wanted to hear but let me tell you the six months
will fly by .

Have you gone to weigh****chers or Jenny craig or Nutri system in the last

two years;  do you belong to a gym where you have to check in ?- that could give you proof of

exercise.

Angie - I'm SO freaking pissed on your behalf.  There is just no excuse for this.  UGH!!

Hang in there and try to look at it as just a bump in the road.

Hugs,

Tia

I can't even make heads or tails of what ALL is required.  Do I need some type of medical  and/or behavioral therapy in ADDITION to the diet?

And nope, I have not seen the doctor each and every month. I often go every 3 months.

I have done WW too many times to count, but I'm sure I stopped before I hit the 6 month mark.

This sets me back so friggin far.  I started calling insurance even before my info session in December.  I am livid.  and pissed and upset, the whole range of emotions......

Angie, with UHC, for the behavioral therapy, they required me to attend 3 sessions with a psychologist/social worker working out of a mental health office. The sessions were covered by UHC.

Sylvie - would you mind sharing via PM the info of the person/office you used?  I'd love to see if they are in network for me.

Angie -

Now that you've gotten a somewhat concrete answer from UHC, call Dr. S's office and see what they say.  Hopefully, they can help you weed through everything.

Hugs,

Tia

My only advice would be to get an appt with your pcp and set up those six monthly appointments;
or will the WLS Dr do the appts for you.  Now what I would also advise is seeing if there
is a Planet Fitness or some gym where you have to check in-  I know at the Mac I do
and can get detailed reports of how often I walk thru the doors - and details on
the cardio/weight lifting I do.  I mention Planet fitness because they are only $10.00
a month.  The surgeon may have a nutritionist you can see as well.

I wish I could reach thru the computer and give you a hug but I can not do that.
I told Tia to give you a hug for me if you go to lunch!

I'm so sorry for you.  It sucks doing it, but not finding out for 6 months that you were supposed to be doing it has to be so much worse.  :(
