I am 3 months out and still don't drink as much fluid as I should. How do you all do it??  I have no problem with eating and taking my vitamins, but when it comes to drinking I forget or I feel like I'm forcing it down. Do you count caffeinated coffee into your daily amount?

I fight this battle as well :  as far as the coffee I don't drink it but I have heard that
for every cup of coffee you should add 8 ounces of water to counteract it?

I guess I'm in the hole if I have to drink extra water to counteract the coffee!

I have trouble remembering to drink more even tho I haven't had my surgery yet.  My bf has been trying to get to drink more water since i moved here 2 yrs ago.  I am getting  better.

I focus on this every day. I always have a bottle with me. And I am constantly taking sips. It is just something I do. I drink in the car, at my desk, at the computer, etc. When I go out to run errands, I carry a small cooler with me in the car. I always have several bottles with me. There is never an excuse for me to miss drinking. I use the largest containers I can. I have a 32 oz. thermal mug that I use for hot tea. During the work week, I arrive at work with 32 oz. of fluids under my belt. I just build from there.

Two weeks or so post-op, I was shocked when I got dehydrated even though I made sure I had the minimum oz. each day. It was then that I learned that we can drink more than the minimum as log as we do not guzzle. Obviously my body needed more than the minimum. It is much less likely that I will dehydrate this far out, but the concept was ingrained in me then to make drinking my #1 priority every day. As a side benefit, when I am drinking, I am not eating.

I asked my nut the last time i saw her about coffee and she said that you can definitely count that as your daily fluid intake.  Really, even though it IS a diuretic, it IS just steeped water in coffee grounds.  I have noticed that I don't pee any more as usual when i drink coffee than if I were to drink crystal light all day.

to be honest, I couldn't get the huge amounts of liquid in that I do now until I was about 8 months out.  give it time honey....you'll get there!

Hi Jo!!

Wow!! You look great!!!  Hope it's all going well for you, besides the water intake.  I agree with Aaron, it just takes time.

And I agree with Debbie, you just constantly have to work at it.  Since I'm chained to my desk during the day, I just line all of my water up in front of me.  I, too, always have bottles of water with me no matter where I go and it seems as if I'm CONSTANTLY sipping, and running to the bathroom.

Hang in there, it gets easier!

Hi Jo,

It is nice to meet you.   I so struggle with the fluid intake as many of the others have already said you need to just keep working on it.  Trying different variations work one that is working better for me lately is Powerade Zero and the doc said it is good because it has electolytes in it.  I also have used water with lemon slices and a few splendas tastes like homemade lemonade.  If you are a coffee drinker or a tea drinker be sure it is decaffinated the rule according to Arlene at Dr A's office is that for every 8 oz's of caffiene intake you need to add 8 oz of fluid- and you know this could be a problem. I also have found I do better with hot fluids than cold fluids.  Also room temperature is better.  In addition to all of the above I sometimes put the kelloggs protein packs in water this gives you an additional 5 grams of protein. Hopefully some of this will help you.  Just remember keep on sipping!  Good luck - let me know if you need any other info.

Hugs
Terri
