I have a question

It has to do with liquids. Ok so Marty is on his liquids this week (and he is being a trooper) and we were wondering what is the real purpose of liquids before surgery. Well it's to lose weight and shrink your liver, right? Or no? So why can't you eat things like vegetables? I mean they basically have little to no calories so why not?

Mellie - As you can probably see, not everyone has to do a pre-op liquid diet - just like not all of us come home on liquids.  I've heard that it's to yes, shrink your liver and to lose some weight pre-op.  As far as veggies, well, maybe the fibers in the veggies would "cling" to the intestines (crazy, I know), and if you did canned veggies, there'd be the sodium issue.

So I guess my answer is that I don't HAVE an answer - or at least a good one!

Well I guess that makes sense. I mean we were having this conversation this morning and just couldnt figure it out. He loves cucumbers and we kept thinking well how fattening could cucumbers be, lol.

Well, cucumbers are gassy veggies, so that may be part of it, too.

Yeah but trust me gas don't build up for long in him..LOL!!  Marty seems to think it is to see if you can handle the liquids after the surgery, like a test.

My surgeon is letting me do liquids plus one serving of lean meat and one serving of vegetables for the pre-op diet, although the nut said it's easier to not cheat if you do all liquids and no foods.
