I have read tons of posts about sugar alcohols, but I cant remember S***!
What is the limit on sugar alcohols? I know they are not good for you, but is there a magic number to stay below?

I don't have a number for you and haven't really had any problems post-op. Pre-op if I had more than two pieces of sugar-free candy w/sugar alcohols, I could count on some "looseness" and horrible gas.  Sorry, TMI.  Post-op, I haven't had more than two pieces at a time but haven't noticed the same issues, if anything they probably help combat constipation.  Some people dump on sugar alcohols more than or instead of regular sugar!

I guess what I'm saying is that each person is different.  You won't know how you react until you experience it.

Hope that helps,
Heather

Shortly before your surgery, you will have an information session with your surgeons office where you will get your "bible" with all of the details you need to follow regarding these things. There is a little variance on this between some offices. I checked my "bible" this weekend and it said 5 grams of sugar and/or sugar grams total. However, natural sugars such as those in dairy products count differently. There is a bit of trial and error in all of this as has already been mentioned. That is because each of us is different and our tolerances will vary somewhat. I would suggest being as strict as possible in the beginning. As you heal and advance into the more food choices, you will learn what is right for you. But even then you will want to keep the sugar grams under control.
